Can You Take the Massachusetts CSL Exam?

Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements

Age
18 years or older
Education
3 years of experience in building construction/design; a 3- or 4-year vocational program or a bachelor's degree can each count for up to 1-2 years of that experience
Background Check
State tax compliance (unpaid state tax obligations can disqualify an applicant)
Additional Requirements
  • Massachusetts does not issue a literal 'general contractor license' — this exam is the Construction Supervisor License (CSL), the state's equivalent credential
  • Exam is open-book: candidates bring their own copies of the referenced code books to the PSI test center
  • Massachusetts does not accept the NASCLA exam in place of the state CSL exam
  • Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration is a separate consumer-protection registration and is not a substitute for the CSL
