This section is one of the most concretely testable parts of the Administrative Responsibilities domain because the numbers are exact: renewal cycle length, fee amount, CE hours by license type, required topics, and the grace period. Expect the exam to test these figures directly.

The Renewal Cycle

A Construction Supervisor License must be renewed every 2 years. The renewal fee is $100. Renewal is not automatic — the licensee must complete the required continuing education and submit a renewal application, with fee, before the license expires.

Why the Topic Mix Matters

The required-topic structure reflects BBRS's priorities for what every practicing CSL holder needs to stay current on: the code itself, the largest single block at 4 hours; safety on the jobsite; sound business and legal practices, including workers' compensation obligations; and energy code awareness, since energy provisions are amended relatively often. Lead Safe Practices is front-loaded into the first renewal because it targets baseline competency for licensees newly exposed to lead-safe renovation rules, rather than repeating training that experienced, already-trained licensees have already completed.

The Grace Period for Lapsed Licenses

If a CSL holder misses the renewal deadline, Massachusetts allows a grace period of up to 2 years to renew the lapsed license, for an additional $100 fee, on top of the standard renewal fee. Within that grace period, the license can still be brought current through renewal. Beyond the 2-year grace period, however, a lapsed license generally cannot simply be renewed — the individual may need to reapply as if seeking a new license, rather than reviving the old one.

This creates a hard planning incentive: a licensee who lets a CSL lapse has a real but time-limited window to fix it cheaply; waiting past that window converts a paperwork problem into effectively starting over.

Practical Renewal Planning

CSL holders should treat CE as an ongoing task, not a last-minute scramble:

• Track your license type's hour requirement. Confirm whether you need 12, 10, or 6 hours — do not assume the requirement is the same as a colleague's if you hold a different category.
• Confirm your provider is BBRS-approved before taking a course; hours from a non-approved provider will not count toward renewal.
• Front-load Lead Safe Practices in your first renewal cycle if it applies to you, since it is not a recurring requirement afterward.
• Do not wait for the deadline. Spreading CE across the two-year cycle avoids scrambling for provider availability right before expiration, and avoids ever needing the grace period at all.
• Keep completion certificates. BBRS can request documentation of completed CE hours and topics.
