2.2 REAL ID, License Classes, License Length & Restriction Codes
Key Takeaways
A Massachusetts REAL ID and a Standard license cost the same and carry the same driving privileges, but only REAL ID is accepted for domestic flights and federal facilities.
Massachusetts Class A covers combination vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001+ pounds when the towed unit is over 10,000 pounds; Class B covers single vehicles of 26,001+ pounds GVWR.
A Massachusetts driver's license is valid for up to five years and typically expires on the holder's birthday; a Standard license is always issued for five years.
Massachusetts drivers may renew a license up to one year before it expires; anyone licensed under 21 receives a vertical card marked 'Under 21'.
Massachusetts restriction code I marks a Junior Operator, code A limits driving to a certified driving instructor, code B requires corrective lenses and code T requires an ignition interlock.
Instructors field questions about license types every week: Do I need REAL ID? Which class do I need for a moving truck? What does the letter on my license mean? Manual Chapter 1 answers each of these.
REAL ID vs. Standard Cards
Every license or ID applicant chooses a REAL ID card or a Standard card.
| Feature | REAL ID license or ID | Standard license or ID |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Same | Same |
| Driving privileges | Full | Identical to REAL ID |
| Domestic flights and certain federal facilities | Accepted | Not accepted; carry a passport or another TSA-approved ID |
| Licensing tests (age, fitness, written, road) | Same | Same |
| Documents required | More (lawful presence, two residency proofs, SSN) | Fewer (see section 2.3) |
| Maximum length | Up to 5 years, shorter if lawful presence ends sooner | Always 5 years |
A person who has a passport or other acceptable federal ID may never need a REAL ID. You may hold only one driver's license or ID card at a time. Your license is also a primary form of identification, showing identity, residence, age and signature, and the RMV stores your photo and signature centrally.
License Classes
| Class | Vehicles | May also drive |
|---|---|---|
| A | Any combination with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 lb or more, when the towed vehicle's GVWR is over 10,000 lb | Classes B, C and D (with endorsements) |
| B | Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lb or more, or such a vehicle towing 10,000 lb GVWR or less | Classes C and D (with endorsements) |
| C | A vehicle that is not A or B but is designed for 16 or more passengers including the driver, or must be placarded for hazardous materials (49 CFR 172.500) | Class D |
| D | Any vehicle or combination that is not A, B, C or M: cars, SUVs, family vans and small trucks | — |
| M | Any vehicle defined as a motorcycle in M.G.L. c. 90, s. 1 | — |
Classes A, B and C are commercial driver's licenses (CDLs). The RMV publishes separate CDL and Motorcycle manuals for those classes.
Warning
Classification turns on ratings and design, not on what is actually loaded. A small bus designed for 16 or more occupants counting the driver is Class C even when it carries only a few riders. A Class D pickup towing a heavy trailer can need Class A if the GCWR passes 26,000 lb and the trailer's GVWR is over 10,000 lb.
License Length and Renewal
- A Massachusetts license is valid for a maximum of five years and typically expires on your birthday.
- A REAL ID can be issued for less than five years when your authorized stay in the U.S. is shorter. The minimum lawful presence is 12 months: someone who proves at least 12 months can receive a REAL ID even if they will be present for a shorter time. The fee is prorated, and that license does not expire on the birthday.
- A Standard license is always valid for five years.
- You may renew up to one year before expiration.
The "Under 21" card
Anyone who obtains or renews a license or ID while under 21 receives a vertical card printed "Under 21." It stays valid until it expires, even after the holder turns 21. A horizontal card may be obtained after the 21st birthday. Renewing before turning 21 still produces a vertical card.
Restriction Codes
Restrictions limit driving privileges and appear as code letters on the front and back of the license. The full RMV list:
| Code | Meaning | Code | Meaning |

| 2 | Medical Log / Glucose Required | N | CDL – Except Class A & B Bus |
| A | Use with Certified Driving Instructor Only | O | CDL – Except Tractor/Trailer |
| B | Corrective lenses | P | No Passengers in CMV Bus |
| C | Mechanical Aid | Q | Class D Automatic Transmission |
| D | Prosthetic Aid / Personal Medical Aid | R | Bioptic Telescoping Lens |
| E | CMV Automatic Transmission | S | Proof of Blood Sugar Level |
| G | Daylight Only | T | Ignition Interlock |
| H | Limited to Employment | U | 3 Wheeled Motorcycle |
| I | JOL Limited / Other | V | Medical Variance |
| J | Other | W | Intrastate Medical Waiver |
| K | CDL – Intrastate Only | X | CDL – No Cargo in CMV Tanker |
| L | CDL – Vehicles without Airbrakes | Y | Restrict to 14 Passenger Capacity |
| M | CDL – Except Class A Bus | Z | CDL – Air Over Hydraulic |
Restrictions instructors meet most
- I – Junior Operator. Added to the license of every operator under 18. It signals the passenger, night and electronic-device rules in section 3.1.
- A – Use with Certified Driving Instructor Only. Driving is allowed only with a certified instructor. This is your credential at work.
- B – Corrective lenses. Added when the driver passed the vision test with glasses or contacts, which must then be worn whenever driving.
- C and D – Mechanical or prosthetic aids. Medical Affairs reviews these case by case and may require a physician's letter. A road-test candidate who relies on adaptive equipment, or on specialized features such as automatic parking, receives a "mechanical/software aid" restriction.
- G – Daylight Only. Linked to the 20/50–20/70 vision band.
- T – Ignition Interlock. Tied to the Melanie's Law interlock requirements in section 8.3.
Tip
Learn codes in pairs that look alike: I (JOL) vs. J (Other); E (CMV automatic) vs. Q (Class D automatic); S (blood-sugar proof) vs. 2 (medical log or glucose).
A traveler's Standard Massachusetts license is current and valid. What does the Manual say about using it to board a domestic flight?
It is not accepted; a REAL ID, passport or other accepted ID is needed
It is accepted because Standard and REAL ID licenses carry identical privileges for every purpose
It is accepted for domestic flights but not for entering federal buildings
It is accepted only if the traveler is under 21 and holds the vertical card
Which Massachusetts license class covers a single vehicle that is designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver, but is not heavy enough for Class A or B?
Class B
Class M
Class D
Class C
A student's license shows restriction code I. What does that tell the instructor?
The driver is a Junior Operator under 18, subject to the JOL passenger, night and device rules
The driver must be accompanied by a certified driving instructor at all times
The driver must carry a medical log showing current blood glucose readings
The driver may operate only a vehicle with an ignition interlock device
