3.2 The Road Test: Scheduling, Sponsors, Vehicle Requirements & Scoring

Key Takeaways

  • A Massachusetts Class D applicant may attempt no more than six road tests in a 12-month period and must wait 14 days after a failed or missed test.

  • A Massachusetts road-test sponsor must be at least 21 with one year of experience and a valid license from their home state; foreign license holders cannot sponsor.

  • A Massachusetts road-test sponsor may sponsor no more than three applicants within one year without approval from the RMV Road Test Program.

  • Massachusetts examiners test the parking brake under 540 CMR 4.04(4) by revving the engine to 1,200–1,300 RPM in the lowest gear.

  • The $35 Massachusetts road test fee is charged again for a failure, a no-show, lateness, a rejected vehicle, no sponsor or cancelling with less than 72 hours' notice.

The road test is the final step from permit to license. Driving schools often schedule tests, supply the vehicle and act as the sponsor, so instructors are accountable for every rule below. The Manual notes that driving instructors can sponsor a road test only if their school is certified.

Scheduling Rules

RuleDetail
PermitYou need a learner's permit of the proper class to schedule
HowOnline at Mass.Gov/RMV (preferred) or through the RMV Contact Center
Free cancellationNo added fee when cancelling or rescheduling with more than 72 hours' notice
Class D attempt limitNo more than six road tests in a 12-month period
After a failure or no-showWait at least 14 days before testing again
Class MAfter two failed road tests, complete a beginner rider course before scheduling another
FeesAll fees must be paid before a new test can be scheduled

A motorcycle applicant who completes the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) skips the RMV Class M road test. Applicants under 18 must take the MREP basic rider course; they cannot take an RMV Class M road test.

When the $35 road test fee is charged again

Road tests are cancelled at no charge when the Governor declares a state of emergency (statewide or for that region) or when an examiner cancels for unsafe weather. You pay the fee again if you:

  • fail the test;
  • are unprepared;
  • are refused because the vehicle fails the examiner's inspection;
  • do not bring a qualified sponsor;
  • fail to appear or arrive late;
  • cancel or reschedule with less than 72 hours' notice.

Rejected road tests

An examiner may reject the test if the applicant or sponsor shows signs of alcohol or substance impairment, or if an odor of alcohol or cannabis comes from either of them, their clothing or the vehicle. A test is also rejected if minor children, babies or animals are in the vehicle and cannot be left unsupervised. Trained service animals are allowed in the vehicle; emotional support animals are not.

Test-Day Requirements (Class D)

  1. A completed road test application, with the parental consent section completed for applicants under 18. Disclose any medical condition or medication that could affect driving; if you do, bring medical clearance. The examiner may forward the application to Medical Affairs.
  2. Your printed learner's permit.
  3. A qualified sponsor with their current, valid license.
  4. An acceptable, properly equipped, legally registered vehicle with its registration certificate.

Applicants under 18 also need the six-month clean record described in section 3.1. Class M applicants bring the permit, application and a properly equipped, registered motorcycle; no sponsor is required.

Sponsor requirements

A Class D road test, including a JOL test, requires a sponsor, even if the applicant holds a valid foreign license. The sponsor must:

  • be at least 21;
  • have at least one year of driving experience;
  • hold a valid driver's license issued by their home state. Foreign license holders cannot sponsor.

An operator may not sponsor more than three different applicants within one year without approval from the RMV Road Test Program. Without a sponsor, no Class D test is given.

Vehicle Requirements

RequirementDetail
Safe and inspectedRegistration shown to the examiner; properly inspected; unsafe vehicles are cancelled
SeatingExaminer sits beside you; sponsor sits in the rear seat behind the driver; no sponsor in the bed of a two-passenger pickup
Parking brakeMust be accessible to the examiner for an emergency stop. Manual or electric is fine, but a centrally located brake is safest. Some large minivans fail this test
Brake testUnder 540 CMR 4.04(4), the examiner tests the parking brake by revving the engine to 1,200–1,300 RPM in the lowest gear
Out-of-state registrationProof of insurance meeting Massachusetts minimums: $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury and $30,000 property damage
Rental vehicleRental agreement plus a letter on company letterhead authorizing the applicant and sponsor to use it for a road test; not required for leased vehicles
TiresNo "donut" (limited-use spare) tire
Driving school vehicleSecond foot brake for the instructor or examiner, plus proper signage

If an applicant is turned away only because the examiner could not reach the braking system, no fee is charged for that test.

Plate restrictions

  • Dealer plate: not allowed unless the applicant proves they are the dealer, the dealer's spouse or a salesperson at the dealership.
  • Farm plate: allowed if acceptable to the examiner and the applicant proves they are family or an employee of the farmer. The vehicle cannot be a passenger car, but it may be a pickup with an acceptable rear seat for the sponsor.
  • Repair plate: never allowed.

What the Examiner Scores

Arrive about 15 minutes early. After inspecting the vehicle, the examiner rides beside you, and only you, the examiner, the sponsor and any approved interpreter may be in the car. You and the sponsor may not talk unless the examiner allows it.

Be ready to:

  • use hand signals;
  • start the engine, and start and stop the vehicle;
  • parallel park;
  • back up about 50 feet;
  • make left and right turns;
  • start, stop and turn on a hill;
  • turn around between curbs (three-point turn);
  • enter and leave intersections;
  • obey signs, signals and rules of the road, and use good driving sense.

The examiner also watches posture (both hands properly on the wheel), lane position, mirror checks and signals before lane changes, following distance, safe speed, yielding and general awareness.

Specialized features (backup cameras, sensors, automatic parking, GPS-guided operation) need not be disabled, but your skills are tested without relying only on them. If you need them, or adaptive equipment, a mechanical/software aid restriction is added. Deaf and hard-of-hearing applicants book through 1-877-RMV-TTDD. An interpreter is arranged, and the applicant may pull over safely to communicate.

Common reasons for failing

  • driving in a way that could cause a crash, or dangerously;
  • violating a motor vehicle law, rule or regulation;
  • showing a lack of experience;
  • refusing or contradicting the examiner's instructions;
  • not knowing the hand signals;
  • being at fault in a crash with a vehicle, pedestrian or object.

The RMV has zero tolerance for violent or abusive conduct by applicants or sponsors.

Test Your Knowledge

A driving school instructor has already sponsored three different road-test applicants this year. What must happen before they sponsor a fourth?

A

They need approval from the RMV Road Test Program

B

The fourth applicant must bring a second sponsor to ride along

C

They must wait 14 days after the third applicant's test

D

Nothing, because certified instructors have no annual sponsorship limit

Test Your Knowledge

How does an RMV examiner check the parking brake of a road-test vehicle under 540 CMR 4.04(4)?

A

By measuring the brake lever's travel with the engine off

B

By rolling the vehicle down a hill at 5 mph and applying the brake

C

By checking the dashboard brake warning light with the ignition on

D

Revving to 1,200–1,300 RPM in the lowest gear

Test Your Knowledge

An applicant cancels their road test 48 hours ahead. What does the RMV charge?

A

The road test fee, because the cancellation came with less than 72 hours' notice

B

A $50 penalty, plus a 14-day wait before rebooking

C

Nothing, because any cancellation made one day or more ahead is free

D

Half of the road test fee, as a late-cancellation penalty
