The Produzione orale skill is short, high-stakes, and fully recorded. Official sample instructions from Università per Stranieri di Siena describe two phases inside one oral test: a brief personal presentation and a face-to-face topic dialogue. Because capitalizzazione is unavailable, an oral fail means repeating listening, reading/grammar, and writing too. Treat oral prep as equal priority to grammar cloze work.

Official timing and scores

What happens in the room

1. Identity check and candidate signature on the oral sheet.
2. Audio equipment test.
3. Examiner records name, surname, and matricola at the start.
4. Breve presentazione personale using a question trace (Come ti chiami?, Di dove sei?, Dove vivi?, Studi o lavori?). Not every listed question must be asked.
5. Candidate chooses one dialogue topic from a short list; examiner opens with a first question and follows up.
6. Before the candidate leaves, examiner verifies the recording and names the file per Siena instructions.

The local somministratore facilitates conversation but does not issue the official score. Speak to the microphone as much as to the person: clear volume beats theatrical performance.

Official topic examples

Published oral input includes prompts such as:

• Prefer city or countryside? Advantages and disadvantages?
• Which aspects of Italian culture feel distant from your culture?
• Healthcare in Italy versus your country: similarities and differences?
• Which documents and procedures are needed for Italian citizenship?

These are opinion/experience dialogues, not shop counter role-plays and not photo descriptions. If your tutor still drills ticket-window scripts, keep them only as vocabulary warm-ups, then switch to topic dialogues that match official input.

Official oral rubric (4 criteria)

Focus on being understood, answering the topic, and using B1 structures from the sillabo. Perfect native pronunciation is not required; intelligibility is. Grammar and communication together already provide 8 of 12 possible points.

Useful hesitation formulas

Failure patterns to avoid

1. One-word answers (Sì. / No.) without expansion.
2. Memorized speech that ignores the examiner’s follow-up.
3. Switching into English for key nouns that you actually know in Italian (appointment, lease, clinic).
4. Freezing after one grammar slip instead of self-correcting and continuing.

Exam-day habits

1. Expand yes/no answers into full sentences with a reason.
2. Self-correct quickly (sono andato... scusi, sono andata).
3. If a word is missing, paraphrase instead of freezing.
4. Stay on the chosen topic; invite follow-ups with concrete examples from daily life in Italy.
5. Practice once a day with a timer: 60 seconds bio + 150 seconds topic dialogue + three surprise follow-ups.

Linking oral prep to the rest of the exam

Oral ability is not isolated. The same civic vocabulary that appears in Ascolto announcements and Lettura notices should reappear in your spoken answers: orari, documenti, prenotazione, affitto, medico di base, mezzi pubblici. Build a personal phrase bank of 40–50 reusable chunks and recycle them across skills.

Also rehearse recovery lines for when you do not understand a follow-up:

• Mi scusi, può parlare un po’ più lentamente?
• Vuole dire che...?
• Non sono sicuro, ma secondo me...

Using a recovery line is better than silence. Assessors grading the recording can still award communicative effectiveness when you negotiate meaning at B1 level.

Finally, simulate the recording constraint: practice with a phone voice memo running continuously. Many candidates speak differently when they know the answer is permanent. One continuous take per day for a week is more useful than ten interrupted rehearsals.
