The Ascolto skill on CILS B1 Cittadinanza checks whether you can understand clear, standard spoken Italian about everyday personal, public, and service situations. The official sillabo sets the construct; the updated scoring sheet sets the point values. Preparing with random podcast clips helps, but preparing with the exact item types is what moves you across the 7/12 floor.

Official parameters

Prova 1 — multiple choice

• 6 short dialogues or situational exchanges between native speakers.
• Complete the stem by choosing one of three options (A, B, C).
• 1 point per correct answer (6 points total).
• Typical traps paraphrase the audio with near-synonyms or mention a rejected plan (volevo prendere il treno, but the final action is different).

Prova 2 — true/false (updated criteria)

• Two longer informational passages (for example a radio segment plus a short report).
• 12 true/false statements.
• 0.5 point per correct answer (6 points total).
• Watch absolute wording (sempre, mai, tutti, solo): writers often twist one detail while keeping the rest familiar.
• Older prototypes used “select the information present” grids; if your practice book still uses that layout, the comprehension skill transfers, but score yourself with 0.5-point V/F math for current criteria.

Recording rhythm you should expect

Official sample recordings follow a predictable cadence:

1. Instructions and first complete playback.
2. About two minutes to read or review the items.
3. Second playback.
4. About two minutes to check answers.
5. After both prove, a short window to copy answers onto the foglio delle risposte.

Do not invent your own timing. Follow the recording. Mark provisional answers in the booklet first; transfer only final answers when told. Many candidates lose easy points by writing on the answer sheet too early and then panicking when they want to change a mark.

Pre-listening technique

During the reading window before or between plays:

1. Underline question nouns, verbs, and time markers (treno, disdire, domani, solo feriali).
2. Predict likely paraphrases (macchina ↔ proprio mezzo; è gratis ↔ non si paga; è chiuso ↔ non è possibile entrare).
3. For V/F items, mark which statements claim quantities, obligations, opening hours, or absolute frequency.
4. Mentally assign speaker roles in dialogues (customer vs clerk, friend vs friend, caller vs office).

Two-pass listening method

Worked distractor example

Audio idea: Elena wanted the 8:00 train, but a strike forces her to drive her own car to a 10:00 meeting.

Question: Come raggiungerà Milano Elena?

• A) In treno con la corsa delle 8:00 — distractor (desired plan, not final action)
• B) Con il proprio mezzo di trasporto — correct paraphrase of la mia macchina
• C) In autobus a causa dello sciopero — distractor (strike mentioned, bus not chosen)

Notice there are only three options, matching the official format. If a commercial practice set gives four options, still train the same trap logic, but remember the real exam uses A/B/C.

Common civic audio themes to rehearse

• Transport: delays, scioperi, binari, biglietti, cambio orario
• Housing: affitto, condominio, riparazioni, disdetta
• Health: appuntamento, ricetta, ticket, orari ambulatorio
• Public offices: documenti, moduli, numero di protocollo, orari di apertura
• Consumer services: rese, consegne, abbonamenti, promozioni

Build a weekly loop: two Prova-1 style dialogue sets + one Prova-2 style V/F set under timed audio-twice conditions.

Exam-day checklist

1. Guess rather than leave blanks — no penalty for wrong answers.
2. Keep answer-sheet numbering aligned with booklet items.
3. Expect standard Italian at medium speed from two native speakers, not whispered headphone audio.
4. Protect the 7/12 floor: aim for mock scores of 9+ so one bad dialogue does not fail the skill.
5. After transferring answers, stop editing unless the proctor explicitly reopens the sheet.
