Qualification and Competency

First aid capability must be present at the work site, along with the means to summon emergency assistance, and the plan must account for remote sites where response times are long.
Aerial Rescue
A climber suspended and unresponsive is a time-critical emergency. Two mechanisms drive the urgency: the original injury or medical event, and suspension trauma — the progressive venous pooling in the legs that occurs in a motionless suspended person and can cause loss of consciousness and, on release, a further physiological insult.
This is the operational reason behind the requirement that a second person capable of performing a rescue be present whenever a climber is aloft, and behind the requirement that rescue be practised rather than merely described.
The rescue sequence, in principle:
- Assess and call. Summon emergency medical assistance immediately and confirm the site information from the plan. Do not delay the call to attempt the rescue first.
