The manufacturer's instructions are the governing document. For life-safety equipment, inspection criteria, service life, permissible cleaning agents, and retirement triggers are set by the manufacturer, and the standard defers to them. Retirement triggers for rope, lanyards, slings, and harnesses:

Retire means destroy. Cut the rope, cut the webbing, and dispose of it, or permanently mark it and remove it from the work site. Hardware and Metal Components

Carabiners, snaps, rings, pulleys, friction devices, and hardware are inspected for:

  • Cracks, deformation, or bending;
  • Wear grooves, particularly where rope runs;
  • Sharp edges developed by wear that will damage textiles;
  • Gate function, alignment, and locking action; a gate that does not close and lock fully is out of service;
  • Corrosion;
  • Illegible markings;
  • Any impact from a drop from height or a shock load.

Connectors used in life support must be self-closing and self-locking, and side-loading or cross-gate loading is a recognized failure mode that hardware selection and rigging discipline must prevent.

Chain Saws

Pre-use inspection covers the chain brake function, throttle interlock, chain catcher, anti-vibration mounts, muffler and spark arrestor, handle and guard integrity, fuel and oil systems for leaks, bar condition and rail wear, chain sharpness, chain tension, and depth gauge setting.

An insulated aerial device is not a licence to contact a conductor. Minimum approach distances still apply, and the insulation rating protects against inadvertent approach, not deliberate contact.

Cranes and Lifting Equipment

For a company or a municipal programme, the defensible record set is: an equipment register identifying each item of life-safety equipment uniquely; the manufacturer's instructions retained for each type; periodic inspection records showing date, inspector, and outcome; a retirement log; and training records showing that each operator is qualified on each machine class they operate. In an incident investigation, the absence of these records is itself a finding.
