Because a flexible cord is not protected from physical damage the way conductors in a raceway or cable assembly are, the IRC strictly limits where and how it may be used.

Permitted Uses

Flexible cords are permitted only for specific, approved applications, including:

  • Connection of appliances that are designed and listed for cord-and-plug connection (for example, ranges, wall-mounted ovens, and cooktops where the connection facilitates removal for service).
