Vents are 20 percent of the exam — about 15 questions — and most of them are applications rather than definitions. Four questions answer any venting problem:
- What has to be vented? Every trap and trapped fixture.
- By which permitted method? Individual vent, common vent, wet vent (UPC 908), island vent (UPC 909), combination waste and vent (UPC 910), or an air admittance valve where permitted.
- What size? Note 6 to Table 703.2 for the minimum, the vent columns of Table 703.2 for capacity, and the Iowa amendment for a wet vent.
- Within what length? The maximum length column of Table 703.2, with not more than one-third horizontal.
Walkthrough 1: wet venting a second-floor bathroom group
Given: a bathroom group on one floor — lavatory (1 DFU), combination bath/shower (2 DFU), and a private 1.6 gpf gravity-tank water closet (3 DFU) — to be wet vented.
- Establish the order of connection. The dry vent connects at the most upstream fixture drain, which is the lavatory. The water closet connects downstream of everything else, so its flush surge travels away from the lavatory and tub trap arms rather than washing across them.
- Total the DFU discharging into the wet vent. 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 DFU.
- Apply the Iowa rule. Rule 481—425.4(7) amends UPC Section 908.2.2: not less than 2 inches for 6 DFU or less, not less than 3 inches for 7 DFU or more. Six lands on the low side of the break point, so the wet vent is 2 inches.
- Size the dry vent. It is sized on the largest required diameter within the wet-vented system, and at minimum on note 6 to Table 703.2 — not less than 1-1/4 inches and not less than half the drain served.

- Do not reach for a circuit vent. Circuit venting is IPC Section 914. Iowa adopts UPC Chapters 2 through 17 plus Appendices A and M, and Appendix C is not adopted. Circuit venting is not an Iowa method.
- Vent individually or in common. Each water closet takes an individual vent; water closets whose fixture drains connect at the same level may share a common vent, sized as an individual vent for the larger of the two drains.
- Size each individual vent. Note 6 to Table 703.2: not less than 1-1/4 inches and not less than one-half the diameter of the drain served. A 3-inch water closet fixture drain therefore takes at least a 1-1/2 inch vent.
- Size the branch vent. Collect the individual vents into a branch vent and size it from the vent columns of Table 703.2 on total vent units and total developed length. Remember the vent capacities are not the drainage capacities: 1-1/2 inch carries 8 vent units, 2 inch carries 24, 3 inch carries 84.
- Check the stack height. If the battery discharges into a stack 10 or more stories tall, UPC 907.1 requires a parallel vent stack connected at or immediately below the lowest fixture drain, with a yoke vent at each fifth floor, connected to the vent stack not less than 42 inches above the floor and to the drainage stack by a wye branch below the lowest drainage branch serving that floor.
Walkthrough 3: a vent that fails on length
Given: a branch vent serving 60 vent units with a developed length of 260 feet.
- Capacity first. From the vent columns: 2 inch carries 24 units — too small. 3 inch carries 84 units — adequate.
- Length second. A 3-inch vent is limited to 212 feet. The run is 260 feet. The 3-inch vent fails on length even though it passed on capacity.
- Pick a remedy.
- Go up a size: a 4-inch vent carries 256 units and is permitted 300 feet. Compliant.
- Or use the oversize provision: where a vent is increased one pipe size for its entire length, the maximum length limitations do not apply. Increasing the 3-inch vent to 4 inches for the full run satisfies the code by that route as well — and in this case both remedies land on the same pipe.
- Check the horizontal share. Not more than one-third of the total permitted length may be horizontal.
The lesson: capacity and length are two separate tests, applied to the same column. Candidates who stop at capacity get this style of question wrong every time.
Walkthrough 4: an island sink
Given: a kitchen island sink with no wall to run a vent up.
UPC Section 909.1 is prescriptive, and the details are the exam:
- The trap is roughed in above the floor.
- The vent extends as high as possible, but not less than the drainboard height, then returns downward and connects to the horizontal sink drain immediately downstream from the vertical fixture drain.
- The return vent connects to the horizontal drain through a wye-branch fitting.
- A foot vent is taken off the vertical fixture vent by means of a wye branch immediately below the floor, extending to the nearest partition and then through the roof, or connecting to other vents at a point not less than 6 inches above the flood-level rim of the fixtures served.
- Drainage fittings are used on the vent below floor level, sloped not less than 1/4 inch per foot back to the drain.
- The return bend under the drainboard is a one-piece fitting or an assembly of a 45-degree, a 90-degree, and a 45-degree elbow, in that order.
- The island sink drain upstream of the returned vent shall serve no other fixtures.
- An accessible cleanout is installed in the vertical portion of the foot vent.
Two items in that list generate most of the questions: the elbow order in the return bend, and the single cleanout in the vertical portion of the foot vent.
Walkthrough 5: venting a sewage ejector sump
Given: a basement bathroom below the sewer, discharging to a sewage ejector.
- The sump is gas-tight and liquid-tight with a bolted, gasketed cover.
- It requires an independent vent carried to the outdoor air. It is not vented by tapping into a nearby fixture vent as an afterthought, and it is not vented by an air admittance valve — AAVs shall not be used to vent sumps or tanks unless the vent system for that sump or tank has been designed by an engineer.
- The reason is mechanical, not bureaucratic: when the pump starts, it displaces air out of the sump. An AAV seals under positive pressure by design, so it cannot relieve what an ejector produces.
- The fixtures discharging into the sump are vented normally on the room side.
