Venting Fixture Batteries Under the Iowa-Adopted UPC

Why this section is a warning as much as a lesson

Walk into an airport restroom and you will see six or eight wall-hung water closets in a row on a single horizontal branch drain. Individually venting each one costs wall space, fittings, and labor, so model codes offer a shortcut: circuit venting, in which the horizontal branch itself is classified as a vent between the most upstream and most downstream fixture drains, with a single circuit vent rising between the two most upstream fixtures.

That shortcut is written in the International Plumbing Code, Section 914 — not in the Uniform Plumbing Code. Many national prep books blur the two codes together and print "UPC 911, Circuit Venting." Iowa is a UPC state, and rule 481—425.1 adopts Sections 101 and 102, Chapters 2 through 17, and Appendices A and M of the 2024 UPC — nothing else. Appendix C, Alternate Plumbing Systems, is not adopted in Iowa. If an exam option cites circuit venting or loop venting to a UPC section number, treat the citation itself as the tell.


What the UPC actually gives you for a battery

1. Individual vents

Each trap and trapped fixture may be individually vented, with the vent connecting to that fixture's drain. Size it from note 6 to Table 703.2: not less than 1-1/4 inches and not less than one-half the diameter of the drain served. This is always legal and never wrong; it is simply the most material-intensive answer.

2. Common vents

Where two fixture drains connect at the same level, a single vent may serve both. The common vent is sized as an individual vent for the larger of the two fixture drains it serves. Back-to-back lavatories on opposite sides of a partition are the classic case, and a common vent is the reason a two-lavatory group does not need two vent risers.

3. Wet venting within the group

UPC Section 908 lets the drain of an upstream fixture serve as the vent for the fixtures downstream of it, within the same story and within the permitted group. Iowa fixes the size in one sentence: 2 inches through 6 DFU, 3 inches at 7 DFU or more (Section 4.3 of this guide covers the full rule). Two points govern the layout:

  • The dry vent connects at the most upstream fixture drain.
  • Water closets connect downstream of the other fixtures, so a flush surge travels away from the trap arms it would otherwise wash.

4. Relief venting on tall stacks

Where a battery discharges into a stack that extends 10 or more stories, UPC Section 907.1 requires a parallel vent stack connected at or immediately below the lowest fixture drain and a yoke vent at each fifth floor, connected to the vent stack not less than 42 inches above the floor and to the drainage stack through a wye-branch below the lowest drainage branch serving that floor.


Designing a six-water-closet restroom battery the UPC way

Given: six public 1.6 gpf flushometer-valve water closets in a row on one horizontal branch drain, single-story building.

  1. Total the load. Table 702.1 rates a public 1.6 gpf flushometer-valve water closet at 4.0 DFU, so 6 × 4 = 24 DFU.
  2. Size the branch on capacity. Table 703.2 allows 35 DFU on a 3-inch horizontal drain, so 24 DFU appears to fit in 3 inches.
  3. Apply note 4 before you commit. No more than 3 water closets or six-unit traps are permitted on any horizontal branch or drain. Six water closets therefore force 4 inches, regardless of the fixture-unit total. This is the step that decides the problem, and it is the step candidates skip.
  4. Vent it. Under the UPC you are not classifying the branch as a vent. Each water closet is individually vented, or paired water closets that connect at the same level share a common vent, with the branch vents collected into a branch vent line and carried to a stack vent or vent stack.
  5. Check the vent sizes. Note 6 to Table 703.2: each individual vent is at least one-half the diameter of the drain served. On a 3-inch water closet fixture drain that is 1-1/2 inches; the collecting branch vent is sized on total vent units and developed length from the vent columns of Table 703.2.

The exam heuristic

When a question describes a row of fixtures on a horizontal branch, ask three things in order: How many water closets are on the branch? (note 4 to Table 703.2 — 3 horizontal, 4 vertical). Are all the fixtures within the group a wet vent may serve, and is the water closet last? (Section 908). How tall is the stack? (Section 907 — 10 stories triggers a parallel vent stack with fifth-floor yoke vents). Nothing in that sequence requires you to know a circuit-vent rule, and answering with one on an Iowa exam is answering from the wrong code.
