Minimum Drain Pipe Slopes (UPC Section 708.0)

The UPC states this in one sentence, and it is worth memorizing because it is shorter than the table most candidates try to reconstruct from an IPC habit. UPC Section 708.1: horizontal drainage piping is run in practical alignment at a uniform slope of not less than 1/4 inch per foot (20.8 mm/m), or 2 percent, toward the point of disposal.

The single exception

Where it is impractical to obtain 1/4 inch per foot because of

  • the depth of the street sewer,
  • the structural features of the building, or
  • the arrangement of the building or structure,

then piping 4 inches (100 mm) or larger in diameter may be run at a slope of not less than 1/8 inch per foot (1 percent) — and only where first approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.

  • 706.2 Horizontal to vertical. This is the only orientation where a sanitary tee is permitted.

A long-sweep quarter bend is normally accepted as a fitting "of equivalent sweep," but notice the code does not name it — it names the wye family. When an exam option lists a fitting the code names verbatim, take it.

The Water Closet Cross-Flow Problem
