9.1 Hospitals — Hong Kong Island & Kowloon

Quick Answer: The Taxi Written Test Part A includes 9 location questions (each with 4 options) taken from the official Taxi Operation Booklet location tables. Your job is landmark → district (or named road) as listed — not free-hand navigation. On Hong Kong Island, anchor Queen Mary Hospital → Pok Fu Lam, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital → Chai Wan, and the Wan Chai / Happy Valley / Wong Chuk Hang private–public clusters. In Kowloon, anchor Queen Elizabeth Hospital → Yau Ma Tei, Kwong Wah Hospital → Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon Hospital → Kowloon City, and Hong Kong Children’s Hospital → Kowloon Bay.

Chapters 9–11 turn the Booklet’s long location lists into exam skills. This first hospital section covers Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Section 9.2 covers New Territories, Lantau, and further private / specialised sites. Section 9.3 covers tourist spots, museums, and performance venues. Hotels, government offices, commercial buildings, and the single route-planning item appear in later chapters.

Why Locations Matter on Part A

Part A has 40 questions. Roughly:

• 30 taxi-regulation items (4 options),
• 9 location items (4 options),
• 1 route item (3 options).

You must score at least 34/40 on Part A. Nine location marks are therefore not a side hobby — they are almost a quarter of the mistakes you are allowed to make if everything else is perfect. The official style is short and absolute: given a hospital, museum, hotel, or plaza name, choose the district or road the Booklet assigns. Sample-style stems you will meet elsewhere in training look like Sino Plaza → Causeway Bay or Southorn Centre → Wan Chai. Hospitals follow the same pattern.

What the test is not asking:

• Exact street numbers or ward names,
• Which tunnel is “cheapest,”
• Live traffic diversions,
• Clinical specialities (except when the name itself is the landmark, e.g. Hong Kong Eye Hospital).

What it is asking: does this name sit under this Booklet place-label?

Official Study Method (Use for All Location Chapters)

Do not try to memorise 230+ landmarks as an unordered dictionary on day one. Use a four-step drill that matches how examiners write options:

1. Chunk by geography — Island public, Island private, Kowloon public, Kowloon private, then NT/Lantau in 9.2.
2. Build district buckets — for each district, list every hospital (and later hotels/venues) that map there.
3. Mark confuse-pairs — names that share a word, street, or nearby district (two Tung Wah hospitals; QMH vs QEH; two hospitals on Wong Chuk Hang).
4. Active recall with 4 distractors — always practice with three wrong districts that sound plausible (another hospital’s home district, a famous tourist area, an NT district).

When space is tight in revision notes, do not claim you have listed every Booklet entry. Cover the high-frequency public hospitals, the major private hospitals, and any road-specific mappings the Booklet uses instead of a plain district name. Depth on those beats shallow “I’ve seen every Chinese character once.”

Hong Kong Island — Public & Major Hospitals

Island memory clusters

Pok Fu Lam trio: Queen Mary Hospital, Fung Yiu King Hospital, and Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital all sit in the Pok Fu Lam bucket. If an option set offers Pok Fu Lam for any of these three, that is usually the anchor answer. Do not ship Queen Mary to “Central” just because patients transfer through town.

Western corridor: Tsan Yuk → Sai Ying Pun and Tung Wah Hospital → Sheung Wan. These are western Island names; examiners love swapping them with Wan Chai or Causeway Bay distractors.

Eastern public flagship: Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital → Chai Wan. The long English name is a gift — “Eastern” points you east; the Booklet place is Chai Wan, not North Point and not Sai Kung.

Two “Tung Wah” names: Tung Wah Hospital (Sheung Wan) is not Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (Tai Hang). Drill this pair until you cannot confuse them under time pressure.

Wan Chai hospital pair: Tang Shiu Kin and Ruttonjee both → Wan Chai. Later, tourist/venue chapter will add HKCEC and Golden Bauhinia to the same district — useful cross-chapter reinforcement.

Wong Chuk Hang path note: Wong Chuk Hang Hospital is listed with Wong Chuk Hang Path (road-specific), while Grantham Hospital maps to Wong Chuk Hang. Same neighbourhood family, different official label precision — if an option gives the Path wording for Wong Chuk Hang Hospital, prefer the Booklet’s road-style answer over a vague “Southern District only.”

Hong Kong Island — Private / Named Hospitals

Private-hospital teaching points

• Happy Valley pair: Adventist (Stubbs Road campus) and Sanatorium both → Happy Valley. Section 9.2 will introduce Hong Kong Adventist Hospital (Tsuen Wan) — a classic confuse-pair across chapters. Always read the full name for Stubbs Road vs Tsuen Wan.
• Peak / Mid-Levels: Matilda → The Peak; Canossa → Mid-Levels. Do not park Matilda in Central.
• Gleneagles → Wong Chuk Hang sits with Grantham in the southern Island cluster (and near Ocean Park in 9.3).
• St Paul’s Hospital → Eastern Hospital Road is another road-specific Booklet style answer. If options include Eastern Hospital Road, that beats a generic “Causeway Bay” guess even if the campus is near the eastern Island hospital corridor in real life.

Kowloon — Public & Major Hospitals

Kowloon memory clusters

Yau Ma Tei double: Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Kwong Wah Hospital both → Yau Ma Tei. This is one of the highest-yield Kowloon facts. Do not send QEH to “Tsim Sha Tsui” because tourists know the waterfront — the Booklet label is Yau Ma Tei.

Kowloon City cluster: Kowloon Hospital, Hong Kong Eye Hospital, and (below) several private hospitals map to Kowloon City. Build one mental folder: “Kowloon City = hospital dense.”

Wong Tai Sin pair with different precision: Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital → Wong Tai Sin (district-style), while TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital → Shatin Pass Road (road-style). Same district family, different official strings — match the option text to the Booklet, not to a simplified map colour.

West Kowloon / SSP: Caritas Medical Centre → Cheung Sha Wan; Precious Blood Hospital (Caritas) → Sham Shui Po. Both “Caritas” words appear — do not merge them into one address.

Children’s Hospital → Kowloon Bay is modern and frequently tested in practice banks. Do not relocate it to Sha Tin or Pok Fu Lam just because other children’s facilities exist there (Duchess of Kent is Pok Fu Lam).

Lok Fu: Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital → Lok Fu — short name, easy to under-drill; put it on a flashcard next to Kowloon City items so you do not default every “Hong Kong … Hospital” to Kowloon City.

Kowloon — Private Hospitals (High Yield)

Drill: Evangel and St Teresa’s reinforce the Kowloon City folder; Baptist → Kowloon Tong is the common escape-hatch distractor when examiners offer Tong vs City.

How to Answer a 4-Option Hospital Item

1. Read the full hospital name (campus qualifier matters).
2. Retrieve the district or road from your bucket, not from “where I once picked up a passenger.”
3. Eliminate options that belong to famous wrong clusters (TST museums, Sha Tin PWH, airport).
4. If two options are neighbouring districts, prefer the exact Booklet string you memorised.
