Coarse ≠ strong hair in every sense. Coarse hair resists chemicals, but coarse hair that has been over-processed can be weaker than healthy fine hair. Texture and condition are separate assessments.
3. Density
Density determines how much hair the haircut is actually moving.
- High density: more weight to remove. Texturizing and thinning become useful. Layering is needed to prevent a bulky "helmet" silhouette.
- Low density: every removal shows. Blunter lines and less internal removal preserve the appearance of fullness. Avoid over-thinning, which makes sparse hair look sparser.
- Density changes across one head. Most people have less density at the temples and the front hairline. A uniform approach ignores that and produces see-through corners.
Density loss over time is a trichology finding, not just a styling one — a client with genuinely thinning density should be consulted about the pattern (see the scalp and hair disorders section) rather than simply cut shorter.
4. Porosity — the Property That Governs Chemistry
Porosity is the cuticle's ability to absorb moisture, and it is the single most important variable for chemical services.

Porosity is usually uneven along one strand. Hair at the scalp is new and least porous; the ends are the oldest and most porous, having survived years of sun, heat and friction. This is why a virgin relaxer or a virgin colour application starts away from the scalp and ends is timed separately — uniform application to non-uniform porosity gives a non-uniform result.

Gummy, mushy wet hair is the classic over-processed presentation. It means disulfide bonds have been broken beyond the point of reformation. A further relaxer, perm, or lightener on that hair will not process — it will dissolve it. The only responsible answers are a protein reconstructor, gentle handling, no further chemical service, and cutting away the damaged length over time.
6. Wave Pattern and Growth Direction

7. Scalp Analysis — Before Every Chemical Service
Chemical Procedures lists Scalp and Hair Analysis in its own right, because a relaxer or a lightener on a compromised scalp is a chemical burn waiting to happen.
Inspect for:
- Abrasions, scratches, sores or open lesions. Rule 61G3-19.016(2), F.A.C., bars any service until an exposed sore or wound is covered with a bandage sufficient to prevent seepage.
- Inflammation, eruptions, or pus. If the barber handles such a client, Rule 61G3-19.011(4), F.A.C., requires immediate hand disinfection — soap and water followed by a 70 to 80 percent rubbing alcohol rinse.
- Suspected contagious conditions — tinea (ringworm), pediculosis, impetigo, folliculitis.
