That oxygen oxidizes and diffuses the melanin, breaking the pigment into smaller, colourless fragments that wash away. The pigment is not covered — it is destroyed and removed.
Two things happen alongside it, and both matter:
- The cuticle swells and lifts so the product can reach the cortex. That is why lightened hair is permanently more porous.
- Some disulfide bonds are damaged. Lightening is the most structurally destructive service in the chapter, and the reason lightened hair breaks.
