About the FL Barber Exam
The Florida Barber licensing examination is a 100-question computer-based written exam administered by Pearson VUE for the DBPR with a 3-hour time limit. Rule 61G3-16.0010(2), F.A.C., weights it across seven categories: safety, sanitation and sterilization (30%), Florida barber laws and rules (25%), hair cutting and hair styling (15%), hair structure and chemistry (10%), chemical procedures (10%), shampooing (5%), and shaving, beard and mustache trimming (5%).

How many questions are on the Florida barber exam?
The Florida barber licensing examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions with a 3-hour time limit, administered by computer at Pearson VUE testing centers or through OnVUE remote online proctoring. The separate Restricted Barber examination is 30 questions with a 1-hour limit.
What score is required to pass the Florida barber exam?
Rule 61G3-16.0010(3), F.A.C., sets the passing grade at no less than 70 percent out of 100 percent. Percentages of .5 or above are rounded up to the next whole number, so a 69.5% is rounded to 70% and passes. The restricted barber examination uses the same 70 percent standard under Rule 61G3-16.007(2), F.A.C.
Is there a practical (hands-on) exam for Florida barber licensing?
No. Florida does not administer a practical hands-on examination for barber licensure. Candidates qualify by completing 900 approved school hours, finishing a board-approved 2-hour HIV/AIDS course, and passing the 100-question written examination.
How many hours of barber school are required in Florida?
Section 476.114(2)(c), F.S., requires 900 hours of training for a full barber license. Rule 61G3-16.001(3)(b), F.A.C., fixes the subject breakdown: Florida Laws and Rules 225 hours, Safety/Sanitation/Sterilization 270, Hair Structure and Chemistry 90, Hair Cutting 135, Shampooing 45, Chemical Services 90, and Shaving/Beard/Mustache Trimming 45. A restricted barber course is a minimum of 600 hours under Rule 61G3-16.006, F.A.C.
When do Florida barber licenses expire and how are they renewed?
Individual Florida barber licenses expire July 31 of even-numbered years. Renewal requires a board-approved 2-hour HIV/AIDS continuing education course and the $70 renewal fee under Rule 61G3-20.009, F.A.C. Barbershop licenses are renewed during the September 1 through November 30 window of each even-numbered year under Rule 61G3-19.014, F.A.C., at a $105 fee.
What is the difference between a Full Barber and a Restricted Barber in Florida?
A Full Barber completes 900 hours of schooling and may perform all barbering services including permanent waving, chemical relaxing, and hair coloring. A Restricted Barber completes a 600-hour course and, per the DBPR Candidate Information Booklet, may cut hair, shave, shampoo, blow dry hair, and apply hair tonics and hair sprays, but may not perform any chemical service.
