Civil twilight ends when the sun’s center is 6° below the horizon — after sunset, often on the order of 20–30 minutes later depending on latitude and season. A takeoff 15 minutes after sunset: position lights on (91.209). Whether you may log night time depends on whether civil twilight has ended. That landing does not count toward 61.57(b) night passenger currency, because you are still inside the hour after sunset. Touch-and-goes do not satisfy 61.57(b); the landings must be to a full stop. Day passenger currency under 61.57(a) is a separate 90-day, three-takeoff/three-landing rule and does not require the night hour-after-sunset window. You may rebuild night currency solo or with an instructor (61.57(e)(5) has a training exception); you may not take a non-required passenger into the 61.57(b) window until the three full-stop night landings are done.

A private, not-for-hire 172 night flight is not illegal solely because the landing light is inoperative, but a dark forced landing without one is a poor PAVE Aircraft decision. Do not mark “landing light required of every private night flight” on the test.
Preflight harder than you do at noon. Walk the position and anticollision lights from outside. Check the landing and taxi lights, panel lights, and flashlight before you need them. A second flashlight (or a headlamp plus a handheld) is ACS PA.XI.A.K4 personal equipment, along with spare batteries, a white light for charts, and a way to read a sectional without flooding the cockpit. Airport, runway, and approach lighting
The rotating beacon is how you find the field when the town lights look just like a runway. A lighted civilian land airport flashes white-green. Water airports use white-yellow. Heliports add yellow to white and green. Military fields use a dual-peaked white plus green. A beacon operating in daytime is a weather flag that ground visibility is less than 3 miles and/or the ceiling is less than 1,000 feet — not a clearance to ignore 91.155.
Runway edge lights are white; on many instrument runways the last 2,000 feet, or the last half of the runway if that is shorter, turn amber. Threshold lights are green facing you on approach; the far end shows red. Taxiway edge lights are blue; taxiway centerline lights are green. REIL (runway end identifier lights) are synchronized flashing whites, one on each side of the threshold, used to pick the runway out of a cluttered night scene.
VASI (typically a two-bar visual approach slope): white over white is high; red over white is on path; red over red is low. PAPI is usually four lights beside the runway: four white high, two white and two red on path, four red low. Believe the VASI/PAPI and the altimeter when a black-hole approach is lying to you. Autokinesis: stare at one static light and it wanders; you chase it with the nose. A false horizon is a shoreline, a cloud deck, or a line of city lights that is not wings-level. Prevention is the same as IMC: fly the attitude indicator and a VASI/PAPI, and stop staring.
Night vision is rod vision. Look 5° to 10° off center and keep the scan moving; a freeze of more than a couple of seconds fades the image. Red cockpit lighting preserves dark adaptation better than white, but red ink and terrain tints on a sectional disappear and focusing inside the cockpit gets harder. Use dim white for the chart, then protect the other eye or look away. Do not use the landing light as a flashlight on the ramp if you still need your rods for the departure.
A night emergency landing is a daytime forced landing with worse information. Select the largest, most obstacle-free area you can find early — a lighted airport or highway is a gift; an unlit field is still better than a black hillside you “hope” is flat. Use the landing light on short final if it helps you see wires, but know it can destroy remaining night vision and reflect off haze. Do not descend into a black hole trying to “feel” the ground.
