Under CEFR B1 descriptors, an independent speaker must be able to scan multiple short everyday texts—such as classified advertisements, brochures, service directories, and administrative bulletins—to isolate specific, predictable factual information and select the single offer that fulfills a predetermined set of complex personal or professional requirements.

In authentic Francophone daily life, choosing a holiday rental, applying for a seasonal job, enrolling in an adult education workshop, or joining a volunteer conservation project requires filtering out dozens of competing offers. Exercise 1 recreates this exact civic task under strict exam conditions.

Structural Anatomy of Exercise 1

The exercise is divided into two distinct components:

1. The Target Profile (La consigne / Le profil): A descriptive prompt establishing the identity and requirements of an individual, a couple, a family, or a group. This persona is governed by 4 to 6 non-negotiable constraints encompassing budget ceilings, calendar dates, transport modes, participant ages, accommodation standards, pet policies, or prerequisite experience.
2. The Document Corpus (Le corpus documentaire): A series of 4 to 5 short authentic or semi-authentic texts (labeled Document A, B, C, D, etc.), each presenting a competing proposition (e.g., four restaurants, four rental cottages, four job postings, or four training courses).

How You Actually Answer — and How the 8 Points Are Awarded

This is the part candidates most often get wrong in preparation, because most textbooks present Exercise 1 as "pick the right advert." On a current-format paper it is a grid, not a single choice.

The official instruction reads: « Vous comparez ces annonces. Pour chaque annonce, cochez (X) OUI si cela correspond au critère ou NON si cela ne correspond pas. » You are given a table with one row per criterion and one column pair (OUI / NON) per notice, and you tick every cell.

Three consequences follow, and they change how you should work:

• Every cell is worth 0.5 point on its own. Getting one notice completely wrong costs 2 points, not the whole exercise. There is no all-or-nothing scoring on the grid, so never leave a cell blank — a blind tick is a 50% chance of half a point.
• You must read every notice against every criterion. The elimination reflex ("this one is over budget, skip it") loses marks here: a notice you have mentally eliminated still has three or four cells to fill.
• Some papers add a final selection question, asking which notice suits the profile. The candidate manual warns that its answer must be consistent with your grid: « La réponse à la question doit être logique par rapport aux croix de mon tableau ; si elle n'est pas logique, je perds 1 point. » Fill the grid first, then read your own ticks to answer.

On a legacy (format 1) paper, Exercise 1 is worth 10 points and does turn on selecting the single conforming offer, so the all-or-nothing logic below applies in full. Both skills are needed; know which paper you are holding.

The All-or-Nothing Rule for the Selection Question (La Règle d'Adéquation Totale)

When the exercise asks you to name the suitable notice — the final question on a format-2 paper, the whole task on a legacy paper — the governing axiom is absolute conformity. An offer that satisfies four out of five requirements but fails a single condition is 100% incorrect:
