Tracking Versus Tracing
Tracking is forward and current: where is this shipment or unit right now, and what is its next event? It answers "where is order 45821?"
Tracing is genealogy: which raw lots, components, work centers, operators, and process settings went into this unit (backward), and which customers received units built from lot L-99 (forward)? Regulated industries set the minimum at one step back, one step forward — identify your immediate supplier and immediate customer for every lot. Both are examined; full internal genealogy is what makes a recall surgical.
An advance ship notice (ASN) is the supplier's electronic notification sent before goods arrive. It carries the purchase-order reference, ship date, carrier and tracking reference, the packing hierarchy (pallet → case → item, each with a license-plate identifier), lot or serial numbers, quantities, and often country of origin. At receiving it enables:
- Dock scheduling and labor planning against known volume instead of surprise arrivals
- Scan-to-receive against expected content rather than a blind count
- Immediate detection of short ships and substitutions, before putaway
- In-transit visibility that updates expected receipt dates in MRP and DRP
- Lot and serial capture at the moment of receipt instead of re-keying a paper packing list later
Identification, Country of Origin, and Chain of Custody
Country of origin is the country where a good was produced or last substantially transformed. It drives duty rate, trade-agreement preference, marking requirements, and import admissibility — which means a second-source substitution is never only a price change. Move a component between countries and landed cost, labeling, and customs documentation move with it. The supporting document set typically includes the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and bill of lading.
Chain of custody is the unbroken, documented record of who held the material, when, and under what conditions; integrity means that record is complete and tamper-evident. It matters for controlled substances, aerospace and defense parts, cold-chain goods, certified sustainable inputs, and any recall you may have to defend. Custody breaks in ordinary ways: a receipt put away without recording the lot, a repack that merges two lots without issuing a new lot number, a temperature excursion nobody logged.

Selection is a matching exercise, not a technology preference. If the requirement is "read a wrapped pallet in one pass," barcode fails on line of sight. If the requirement is "prove the shipment never exceeded 8 °C," only a condition sensor answers it.
Traceability Standards: GTIN, ISO, Lot, and Serial
The global trade item number (GTIN) is the GS1 identifier for a trade item, encoded in retail and logistics barcodes and in RFID tags. Learn this cold: a GTIN identifies what the item is, not which unit it is. Reaching a specific instance requires a batch/lot number or a serial number carried alongside the GTIN. Companion GS1 keys include the global location number for places and the serial shipping container code for logistics units.
On the ISO side, ISO 9001 requires organizations to identify their outputs and, where traceability is a requirement, to control and retain records of unique identification; ISO 22005 addresses traceability in the feed and food chain; ISO 28000 covers supply chain security management.

Regulated assemblies use both: a serialized device built from lot-controlled components. Do not serialize commodity fasteners; the data cost buys nothing.
Product Recall: Surgical or Catastrophic
A bottling plant traces a contamination to raw-material lot RM-4471. With lot genealogy the query is one hop — which finished lots consumed RM-4471? Answer: one production day, 38,000 cases, of which 22,000 already shipped to four distribution centers and a known store list. Pull those.
Without lot control, the only defensible boundary is the last known-good point, usually the previous audit — a full quarter, roughly 2,400,000 cases, across every customer. That is about 63 times the units, plus reputational damage and, worse, no way to prove the recall was complete.
Recall readiness therefore lives in inventory control, not in the press office: one-up/one-down data retention, mock-recall exercises timed against a stated internal target, stop-ship and quarantine flags that genuinely block picking and shipping, and reconciliation of quantity produced against quantity recovered.
Off-Site and Deployed Inventory
Inventory you cannot see is still your problem. ECM 9.0 asks you to monitor tooling, infrastructure, customer-owned material, and supplier-owned material wherever it sits.

Why it stays on the planner's radar even when it is off the balance sheet: it supplies or consumes MRP, it creates a continuity exposure, auditors require third-party confirmation of it, and unrecorded consignment consumption produces both supplier invoice disputes and phantom availability in your own system.
Trap: "consignment means the supplier is responsible, so I can ignore it." Ownership and responsibility are different questions. The supplier owns it; you count it, you report it, and you plan with it.
