  • Translating strategy into operations and supply chain strategies
  • Understanding make-to-stock, make-to-order, assemble-to-order, and engineer-to-order implications
  • Selecting process types and layouts that fit volume/variety
  • Using KPIs that reinforce the chosen strategy instead of conflicting metrics

Strategy items are rarely pure trivia. They often ask which design or metric set best supports a stated competitive priority. If a firm competes on rapid customization, inventory and capacity answers that assume pure MTS cost minimization are usually wrong.

Domain II — Conduct S&OP to Support Strategy (10%)

Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) is the monthly (or periodic) executive process that balances aggregate demand and supply at volume level before detailed mix planning. At 10%, it is not the largest domain, but it is the bridge between strategy and master scheduling.

You should be fluent in:

  • S&OP purpose, participants, and decision horizon
  • Building and reconciling aggregate demand and supply plans

Internal supply is the heart of master scheduling, MRP, and capacity planning. This is where many candidates under-prepare if they only memorize definitions.

  • Master Production Schedule (MPS) construction and maintenance
  • Rough-cut capacity planning (RCCP) as an MPS sanity check
  • Material Requirements Planning (MRP): BOM explosion, gross-to-net, lead-time offsetting, planned orders

Sustainability and reverse-logistics themes often appear near external supply and product life-cycle decisions; know the planning implications (returns, remanufacturing inputs, waste hierarchy) even when they also touch Domain VIII/IX language.

Domain VI — Plan and Manage Inventory (14%)

Inventory is the single heaviest domain. Allocate study hours accordingly. CPIM expects both policy judgment and calculation comfort.

  • Priority rules (for example FCFS, EDD, SPT, critical ratio concepts)
  • Finite vs. infinite loading ideas at a conceptual level
  • Dispatching, input/output control, and lead-time components
  • Managing materials so schedules are feasible

Domain VIII — Plan and Manage Distribution (8%)

Distribution is the lightest domain by weight, but it is still roughly one in twelve scored questions and is highly interconnected with inventory and demand.

  • Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) as the distribution analogue to MRP logic

Domain IX covers how operations sustain performance: quality systems, lean/JIT, Six Sigma/kaizen tools, capital/technology investments, and planning-system technology.

ECM domains are listed separately, but the exam expects integrated thinking:

  1. Strategy (I) sets priorities and design constraints
  2. S&OP (II) sets aggregate volume plans
  3. Demand (III) feeds forecasts and orders into plans
  4. Internal/External supply (IV–V) create feasible supply responses
  5. Inventory (VI) buffers uncertainty and disconnects in the chain
