1. Choosing a Method: The Four Questions
- Where does the pest actually live? Foliage, stem, root zone, soil surface, seed, harborage, burrow, or water. The product has to reach it.
- What does the label authorize? Method is part of the label. "Do not apply by air" and "do not chemigate" are absolute prohibitions, while an unprohibited method is generally permissible under FIFRA § 2(ee).

Treated seed must never enter food or feed channels, and dust-off from treated seed is a recognized pollinator exposure route — use the seed lubricants the label specifies.
Baits place a small amount of active ingredient in an attractive matrix. They deliver low environmental load but concentrate risk on non-target animals and children, so tamper-resistant stations and inaccessible placements are the rule.
