1.1 Exam Format, Eligibility and Current References

Key Takeaways

  • CCRA has 125 items, including 25 unscored pretest items, within 180 minutes.

  • ACRP requires a passing scaled score of 600; it is not a fixed raw percentage.

  • ACRP may approve one 1,500-hour experience waiver; a degree title alone does not establish approval.

Exam Format, Eligibility and Current References

The Certified Clinical Research Associate (CCRA) is ACRP's credential for professionals monitoring clinical trials on behalf of a sponsor. This is independent preparation by OpenExamPrep. Check the ACRP CCRA page and June 2026 handbook before applying. Facts in this chapter were checked on October 18, 2026; registration and appointment policies can change.

CCRA Examination Architecture & Test Administration

The CCRA examination is a computer-based assessment designed to evaluate practical, scenario-based monitoring competence. Candidates are tested on their ability to interpret complex clinical situations, identify protocol and regulatory breaches, and execute appropriate corrective interventions.

Examination Breakdown

The test administration parameters are rigorously standardized across all global testing windows:

  • Total Test Items: 125 multiple-choice questions.
  • Scored Questions: Exactly 100 items are evaluated to determine the candidate's final score.
  • Unscored Pretest Items: Exactly 25 items are included as unscored, psychometrically evaluated experimental questions.
  • Option Structure: Each item contains 4 potential answer choices with a single correct or best answer.
  • Time Window: 3 hours (180 minutes) of continuous testing time.
  • Delivery Modalities: Administered globally through PSI Services via either in-person proctored testing centers or secure live remote online proctoring.

Tip

The 25 pretest items are distributed seamlessly throughout the 125 questions and are visually indistinguishable from scored questions. Pretest items are evaluated statistically for reliability and difficulty before being approved for future examination forms. You must treat every single question on the exam with identical diligence, as attempting to guess which questions are experimental is unhelpful.

Psychometric Scoring Methodology & The 600 Scaled Standard

ACRP employs a criterion-referenced scaled scoring system rather than a raw percentage score (such as 70% or 75%). This methodology protects candidates from being disadvantaged by taking a relatively difficult examination form while preventing unearned passes on easier forms.

The Scaled Score System

  • Maximum reported score: The current handbook states a highest possible scaled score of 800.
  • Passing Threshold: A scaled score of 600 is required to pass.
  • Interpretation: ACRP converts correct-answer totals to a scaled score. A score of 600 is not 600/800 or a fixed percentage correct. The exam is not scored on a curve, and another candidate's result does not determine yours.

Candidates receive an immediate pass/fail notification upon completing the computer-based test at the testing center or online portal, followed by an official score report detailing performance across individual domains.

Eligibility Criteria & Verification Pathways

Use the current eligibility criteria and ECO together. ACRP evaluates the documented experience; do not infer eligibility or ineligibility solely from a job title.

Qualifying work and the experience waiver

The current CCRA page describes verifiable paid work in human-subject research. More specifically, the June 2026 handbook requires 3,000 hours performing CRA essential duties, including monitoring and associated oversight, under verifiable employment. General involvement in research alone does not establish the required CRA experience. The employer must be able to verify the work. Experience more than ten years old, volunteer work, education-programme hours and paid or unpaid internships are excluded. Use the CCRA ECO to assess whether your activities fit the credential's monitoring role; a job title alone does not prove eligibility.

ACRP may grant one 1,500-hour waiver for an active ACRP certification or a qualifying clinical research education programme. An education programme must have appropriate third-party accreditation, cover the corresponding ECO topics, and provide knowledge equivalent to the waived experience. ACRP decides programme acceptability during a paid application; a degree title by itself does not guarantee a waiver. Two qualifying routes do not create a 3,000-hour waiver.

For example, an applicant with 2,200 qualifying hours and an ACRP-approved 1,500-hour waiver exceeds the remaining 1,500-hour requirement. An applicant with the same hours whose education has not been accepted must not assume eligibility. Keep employer contacts, dates, role descriptions and application records accurate. ACRP can request supporting information during its eligibility audit; follow the current notice's response deadline.

The Global Testing Standard: ICH Guidelines & Declaration of Helsinki

A frequent stumbling block for candidates is assuming that local or national regulations govern the CCRA examination. The CCRA is an internationally standardized credential, referenced exclusively to international consensus guidelines established by the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) and the World Medical Association (WMA).

Current examination references

Since July 15, 2026, ACRP exams use ICH E6(R3) in place of E6(R2). The live CCRA page lists E6(R3), E2A, E8(R1), E9, E9(R1), E11(R1) and the Declaration of Helsinki. E6(R3) has 11 main principles, operational Annex 1, and appendices covering the IB, protocol and essential records. R2 numbering and its 13-principle list are historical references, not the current study framework.

Study the ECO alongside these references. The outline contains six domains weighted 12%, 18%, 14%, 18%, 25% and 13%. Its tasks include privacy and device-related examples, but ACRP explicitly says country-specific FDA or EMA regulatory frameworks are not tested. Learn the international monitoring decisions: whether consent preceded research, whether the protocol was followed, whether safety information was escalated, and whether data and records remain reliable.

An ICH guideline is not itself a universal statute. Actual trial work must also satisfy applicable local requirements. Distinguish an exam's reference scope from the laws governing your workplace; neither overrides the other.

Test Your Knowledge

A CCRA candidate answers all 125 questions. Which statement correctly describes scoring?

A

Only 100 items contribute to the scaled result; 600 is the passing scaled score.

B

Every item counts and 600/800 means exactly 75% correct is required.

C

A candidate must pass each domain separately at 60%.

D

Pretest questions are labelled so candidates may skip them.
