Blueprint position: NIC item I.B.3 requires identifying muscles and joints and their functions related to (a) the head and face and (b) the neck, shoulders and upper back. Item I.B.4 requires understanding the functions of four body systems. Arizona reinforces both through A.R.S. § 32-551(B)(1), which puts "histology of the hair, skin, muscles and nerves" inside the mandatory 250-hour theory block.

1. The Scalp Muscle Group

[!IMPORTANT] Aponeurosis is a tendon, not a muscle. A recurring theory distractor treats the epicranial aponeurosis as a third belly of the epicranius. It is the connective tissue that joins the two bellies, and its looseness over the skull is what allows a scalp to be lifted and kneaded during a massage.

[!CAUTION] Ask, do not push. Never force a client’s head into position. Ask them to turn or tilt, and stop at the point where they resist. Clients with cervical arthritis, disc problems or recent whiplash may have a very small safe range, and the barber has no way to know without asking.
