Blueprint position: Domain III, Hair Care Services (40%), is the largest domain on both the theory and written practical examinations. Item III.B.2 covers the principles and procedures for shampooing and conditioning, and item III.B.3 covers scalp treatments and scalp massage/manipulation. Arizona reinforces this: A.R.S. § 32-551(B)(2) devotes practice hours to "massaging and manipulating muscles of the scalp, face and neck."


1. How Shampoo Actually Works

Shampoo is a surfactant — a surface active agent. Each surfactant molecule has two ends that behave in opposite ways:

When the tail attaches to oily soil and the head is pulled by rinse water, the soil is lifted from the hair shaft and carried away. Water alone cannot do this because oil and water do not mix.

Water hardness matters. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium salts that combine with soap to leave an insoluble scum on the hair; soft water lathers freely. Most professional shampoos are formulated to work in either, but a client in a hard-water area will notice product build-up faster.


2. Selecting the Right Shampoo

That is why a conditioner or acid rinse at roughly pH 4.5 to 5.5 follows: the acid closes and smooths the cuticle, restores the hair’s natural pH, and removes any residual alkalinity. Shampooing immediately before a chemical relaxer is generally avoided precisely because it lifts the cuticle and removes the protective sebum that shields the scalp.

4. Shampoo Service Procedure

  1. Consult and analyse — examine hair and scalp for texture, porosity, build-up and any condition that contraindicates service
  2. Drape — protect the client’s clothing from direct contact with the shampoo bowl and neck rest, as R4-10-112(J)(1) requires, using clean linens, capes, robes or protective neck strips
  3. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward
  4. Test the water temperature on your own wrist and check it with the client
  5. Wet the hair thoroughly, shielding the face and ears
  6. Apply and emulsify a small quantity, working from the hairline back with the cushions of the fingertips — never the fingernails
  7. Manipulate the scalp in a systematic pattern, front hairline to nape
  8. Rinse completely, lifting the hair to reach the nape and behind the ears
  9. Repeat only if needed
  10. Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, comb through, rinse per label
  11. Towel blot, do not rub, and comb out gently

[!CAUTION] Arizona sanitation at the shampoo bowl. R4-10-112(N)(3) requires shampoo bowls and neck rests to be cleaned with soap and warm water or other detergent and disinfected after each use and kept in good repair, and R4-10-112(N)(4) requires shampoo neck rests to be disinfected before each use with the EPA-registered product described in R4-10-112(A)(5). R4-10-112(S)(2) adds that shampoo bowls must be cleaned and disinfected and their drains kept free running.


5. Scalp Treatments

A scalp treatment addresses the condition of the scalp itself rather than the hair shaft.

Contraindications. Do not perform a scalp treatment or massage where the scalp is abraded, inflamed, sunburned, or shows signs of infection. Arizona makes this a rule and a statute: R4-10-112(I) bars performing a service on a person with a contagious disease that may be transmitted by the service, or who is exhibiting a sign of infection such as reddened, erupted or open skin; A.R.S. § 32-574(A)(7) makes it unlawful to serve a person with a visible disease, pediculosis or open sores suggesting a communicable disease until a licensed physician furnishes a signed statement that the condition is not infectious.
