Wet Styling, Blow-Dry Styling & Thermal Styling Procedures

Blueprint position: Item III.C.2 under Hair Care Services requires candidates to "apply knowledge of principles, procedures and safety of hair styling" across four sub-headings: (a) wet styling, (b) blowdry styling, (c) thermal styling and (d) natural hair styling. The first three are covered here; natural hair styling has its own section.


1. The Bond Chemistry Behind All Temporary Styling

Every temporary style is a physical change to the hydrogen bonds in the cortex — not a chemical one.

Because hydrogen bonds re-form wherever the hair dries, a wet set or a blow-dry lasts only until humidity or water re-breaks them. That is the whole reason a style "drops" on a humid day, and the reason a permanent wave — which rearranges disulfide bonds — does not.

[!IMPORTANT] The style sets as the hair cools, not while it is hot. Heat softens the hydrogen bonds; the shape locks when the section returns to room temperature. Releasing a curl or a brush while the hair is still warm loses most of the result. This applies equally to blow-drying and to thermal irons.


2. Wet Styling

Wet styling moulds damp hair into a shape and holds it while it dries.

3. Blow-Dry Styling

Blow-dry styling shapes and dries the hair in a single operation using airflow, tension and cooling.

Procedure

  1. Shampoo, condition and towel-blot; apply a thermal protectant
  2. Rough-dry to roughly 80 percent — detailed brushwork on soaking hair wastes time and overheats the shaft
  3. Section the head and work from the nape upward
  4. Place the brush at the base of the section, keep even tension, and follow the brush with the nozzle pointing down the hair shaft from root to end so the cuticle lies flat
  5. Hold the section on the brush and give it a cool shot before releasing
  6. Finish with a light product; avoid loading the roots

[!CAUTION] Direct the airflow with the cuticle, not against it. Blowing from the ends toward the roots lifts the cuticle scales and produces frizz and dullness no finishing product will fix.


4. Thermal Styling

Thermal styling applies direct contact heat with an iron or a heated comb.

Safety rules that are examination staples

  • Test the iron before it touches hair. Clamp it on a damp cloth or a strip of tissue paper for about five seconds. Scorching or browning means it is too hot.
  • Match temperature to the hair. Fine, porous, lightened or chemically treated hair takes the lowest effective setting. Coarse, resistant, virgin hair tolerates more.
  • Never use thermal irons on hair with metallic salt residue or on hair immediately after a hydroxide relaxer — the combination can cause severe damage or breakage.
  • Protect the scalp with a comb placed between the iron and the skin at the base of the section.
  • Rest hot tools on a heat-resistant surface, never on a countertop or towel.
  • Hair pressing is graded as soft press (about half the curl removed, one pass), medium press (more pressure, one pass on each side of the strand) and hard press (two passes on each side). A hard press repeated too often causes irreversible straightening from cortical damage.

[!IMPORTANT] Heat damage cannot be conditioned away. The signs are a burnt or sulphurous odour, a rough brittle feel, loss of elasticity, and breakage at the point of contact. Once the cortex is scorched, only cutting removes the damage. Where a client shows these signs, recommend a lower-heat routine and a protein and moisture regimen, and document the observation.

Arizona rule R4-10-112(D) applies to every one of these tools: electrical equipment must be in good repair, disinfected before each use by removing foreign matter and spraying or wiping with a compatible EPA-registered disinfectant for the label contact time, and then stored in a clean place separated from its cords.
