Two Kinds of Stress
Stress is the body's response to a demand. Schedule 4 asks for the effects of short- and long-term stress separately because they behave very differently.
Acute (short-term) stress is the immediate response to a demand — a link warning, a bird strike, a bystander walking into the area. Relaxation. Deliberate slow breathing measurably lowers heart rate and reduces the acute stress response — four seconds in, four seconds out, for half a minute, before arming. Physical fitness and adequate sleep raise the threshold at which stress becomes disabling. Take actual breaks between flights rather than working through them.
Time management. The most effective stress control available to a self-employed remote pilot, because it removes the pressure before it arises:
- Build slack into the schedule — no back-to-back jobs with zero margin.
- Quote realistic timeframes, including weather contingency, from the start.
- Set the go/no-go criteria before you leave home, not on site with the client watching.
- Say no to the sixth site. A day planned to the minute has no capacity to absorb a delay, and it converts every minor problem into schedule pressure.
