Why Human Factors Matter for Remote Pilots

Aviation has known for decades that the person at the controls is the most failure-prone part of the system, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) are no different. A drone does not crash itself because the battery was low and the pilot was staring at a screen — the pilot let it crash. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) expects the remote pilot to manage their own fitness to fly with the same seriousness as a manned-aircraft pilot, because the consequences of a poorly-judged flight (people injured, property damaged, controlled airspace infringed) are just as real.

Human performance is one of the seven common MOS knowledge units (RHPF), and its questions are mostly applied: they describe a scenario and ask whether the pilot should fly, what they missed, or what they should do next. Memorising the mnemonics is the floor; understanding why each one matters is what gets you the marks.

The IMSAFE Self-Assessment

IMSAFE is a pre-flight self-assessment mnemonic you run on yourself before every flight. Each letter is a question about your fitness to fly. If any letter is a clear "yes, I have this problem", you should not fly until it is resolved.

How to use IMSAFE

Run it the night before and again at the flight site. Be honest — the only person you can fool is yourself, and the only person who gets hurt is on the ground below your drone. If a flag is red, the response is almost never "push through". It is:

  • Delay the flight until the issue clears (eat, rehydrate, rest).
  • Delegate to another qualified pilot on the crew.
  • Cancel the job for the day if nothing resolves it.

The E in CASA's version of IMSAFE is most often written as Eating/Emotion. Some training organisations teach it as Eating only, others as Emotion only. For the exam, treat it as both: a pilot who is hungry, angry, or emotionally distracted is not a safe pilot.

Fatigue

Fatigue is the most underestimated human factor in RPAS operations. The danger is that fatigue degrades you before you feel sleepy. By the time you are yawning, your reaction time, vigilance and judgement have already been worse than normal for some time.

What fatigue degrades

  • Reaction time — you notice the battery warning or the obstacle a beat too late.
  • Vigilance — you stop scanning, you miss the dog that just ran under the drone, you miss the light aircraft on the downwind leg.
  • Judgement — you accept risks you would have refused when fresh ("she'll be right, I'll just grab one more orbit").
  • Decision-making — you default to the familiar action instead of the correct one.

Common RPAS fatigue sources

  • Early starts — dawn shoots for real estate or film mean 4 AM wake-ups.
  • Long drives — three hours each way to a rural inspection site, then you fly on arrival.
  • Long shoot days — multiple flights across a full day in sun and wind.
  • Poor sleep the night before — hotel, travel, anxiety about the job.

Mitigations

  1. Sleep — protect 7-8 hours the night before a job; there is no substitute.
  2. Rest breaks — schedule a break every 45-60 minutes of active flying.
  3. Task rotation — swap pilot and observer/spotter roles so nobody is on the sticks for hours.
  4. Hydrate and eat — dehydration and low blood sugar amplify fatigue.
  5. Hard go/no-go threshold — if you are visibly impaired, the flight does not go up, full stop.

Caffeine is not a fatigue mitigation. It masks sleepiness but it does not restore judgement or reaction time. A caffeinated tired pilot is still a tired pilot.

Complacency

Complacency is the experienced-pilot trap. It is what happens when you have done a site or a manoeuvre a hundred times and your brain stops treating it as a risk. The phrase is "familiarity breeds reduced vigilance".

The classic scenario: you fly the same real-estate property every month. You know the trees, you know the powerlines, you know the landing spot. So you skip the full pre-flight checklist. You do not walk the site for changes. You take off without re-checking wind. Then a tree branch has grown into the flight path since last month, or a tradesperson has strung a new temporary powerline across the yard, and you fly into it.

Why complacency is dangerous

  • It affects the most experienced pilots, not the beginners.
  • It is invisible to the pilot — you genuinely feel sharp and efficient, not careless.
  • It removes the safety margin that checklists and site walks provide.
