1.1 Current BOC ATC Exam Facts

Quick Answer: The Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) exam is a 175-item, 4-hour, internet-based test given at Meazure Learning professional testing centers. The blueprint is the Practice Analysis, 8th Edition (PA8). Scores are scaled 200–800 with a passing standard of 500. You may not use the Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC®) credential until your BOC file is complete.

The BOC is the national credentialing agency that administers the certification examination for athletic trainers. A passing result is required for the ATC® credential, but a pass by itself is not enough. BOC grants ATC® only after the candidate file is complete. Get the logistics right first—vendor, score scale, fees, eligibility, and the certification-versus-license distinction—before you drill special tests and modality parameters.

Who Should Sit the Exam and When

There are two eligibility pathways.

1. Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) professional program. The recognized program director confirms your enrollment or graduation on Form AT102. You must be enrolled or registered in the final semester or quarter before graduation in order to apply.
2. International Arrangement (IA) pathway. Credentialed professionals from Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI), the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT), or the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) apply through a credentials evaluation by International Consultants of Delaware, Inc. (ICD).

Apply too early and the window you wanted is gone: applications are not processed for the current exam if you are not yet in the final term. Another high-cost mistake is treating BOC certification as a license. Certification is not a license. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia regulate athletic training. The BOC exam is recognized by those state athletic training boards for the exam requirement, but each state's practice act still governs legal practice. Passing the exam does not automatically authorize you to work in a given state.

The exam is not delivered at Pearson VUE. It is not advertised as live remote proctoring for the athletic trainer exam. Plan to sit in a Meazure Learning professional testing center. The PA8 Blueprint: Five Domains

PA8 is the job analysis that defines entry-level athletic training and the exam blueprint. Domain names, percentages, and N ITEMS come from the PA8 Content Outline:

Domain 2 and Domain 4 are the two largest slices. Each is 25.6% (32 N ITEMS). Together they are 51.2% of the weighting base—more than half the scored-item plan. Domain 5 is only 8.0% (10 N ITEMS). That is small, not optional: documentation, legal scope, and quality-improvement items still appear, and they are inexpensive points if you study them.

Why the exam has 175 items if N ITEMS is 125

BOC's current candidate page describes a combination of 175 scored and unscored (experimental) items. PA8 publishes domain N ITEMS that sum to 125. Those 125 figures are the weighting blueprint, not a public claim that you will see exactly 125 scored questions on test day. BOC does not currently publish a 150-scored / 25-pretest split on the candidate page. Treat any prep book that recites "150 scored / 25 pretest" as unverified unless BOC republishes that split. You will not know which items are experimental. Answer every item.

Fees, Windows, and the Five-Step Path

Application fees are non-refundable. From the 2026–2027 Candidate Handbook and bocatc.org/candidates:

The exam registration fee is $375 if you test in the United States or Canada and $495 outside the United States or Canada ($375 plus a $120 international surcharge). A retake costs the full exam registration fee again. A returned ACH payment costs $25.

BOC typically offers five windows per year. Applications and registrations are due by 5 p.m. Central Time. Example 2026–2027 windows:

The operational sequence is apply (AT102, with program-director or ICD confirmation) → register and pay → receive the Meazure scheduling email → sit the exam → wait for results. Results post 2–4 weeks after the last day of the window, not 2–4 weeks after your personal appointment. An email from Exam@bocatc.org tells you to open your BOC profile.

CAATE graduates schedule in Canada or the United States. IA candidates have additional site rules (for example, ARTI may schedule in Ireland, Canada, and the United States). Confirm the handbook language for your pathway before you assume a city is available.

Scoring: 500 Is a Scale, Not a Raw Count

Meazure Learning scores the exam. Only items aligned to PA8 and validated for scoring count. Raw scored items are equally weighted, then equated across forms, then linearly transformed onto the 200–800 scale. The passing standard is 500, set with the Modified Angoff (Angoff Modified Technique): a panel of certified athletic trainers estimates the probability that a minimally acceptable candidate would answer each item correctly.

Passing candidates do not receive a numeric score. Once you have met 500, the exact scale score is not used to rank you against other passing candidates. Unsuccessful candidates receive the scaled score plus a domain-level descriptive report compared with a reference group of passing candidates. Use that report to rebuild a study plan; it is not a second official pass/fail by domain.

Retakes are unlimited within one year of the date exam results are posted. State boards may impose extra attempt limits, so check the practice act where you intend to apply for a license.

After You Pass: Certified vs Certification Eligible

If you pass and the file is complete, status is Certified and you may use ATC®. If you pass but the file is incomplete, status is Certification Eligible. Use of ATC® is strictly prohibited until both of the following are on file:

1. An official transcript showing the athletic training degree conferred (not a pending graduation date).
2. Current Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) documentation.

Do not print ATC® on a resume, email signature, or social profile while you are Certification Eligible. That is a professional-practice issue, not a paperwork nicety.

Newly certified athletic trainers begin earning continuing education units (CEUs) the day they are certified. Athletic trainers certified in 2026 need 20 CEUs by January 31, 2028, plus prorated CPC Renewal requirements (one SMART goal, at least three of four My Challenge Question segments, and one Learning Path activity), and they must stay in the CPC Renewal path. Their first full two-year CPC cycle ends January 31, 2030 with 40 CEUs, two SMART goals, and two Learning Path activities; the legacy 50-CEU reporting cycle applies to ATs certified before 2026 who opt out of CPC Renewal. The certification maintenance fee is waived for the year of certification.

Pass Rates and the Job Market

Do not blend years into a single invented rate. BOC's 2024–2025 Exam Report lists a first-time pass rate of 74.6% (1,683 of 2,256), an overall pass rate of 56.2%, and a retake pass rate of 29.3%. The BOC About page figure for 2025–2026 first-time candidates is 68.4% (1,640 of 2,397). First-time candidates outperform retakers by a wide margin, which is why a domain-weighted first attempt matters.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook reports a May 2024 median pay of $60,250 for athletic trainers and 11% projected employment growth from 2024 to 2034 (much faster than average). Ignore older circulating figures such as $57,000 or 17% growth through 2031.
