1.4 Application, Scheduling, Identification, and Retake Rules
Key Takeaways
- Apply in MyCert, upload English-language training and experience documentation, sign the Code of Ethics and confirmation statement, and pay in full before review; ASNT says review typically takes 2–4 weeks.
- After the Letter of Approval, you must schedule and complete all applied-for exams within one year; cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead or forfeit fees.
- Bring two original, valid IDs whose names match your certification application and MyASNT record; resolve name mismatches with certifications@asnt.org at least 72 hours before the exam.
- A failed exam requires a 30-day wait, a retake application and fee in MyCert, and a new approval letter before you can schedule again.
Why process errors cost the same as a failed exam
The technical chapters in this guide cannot recover a forfeited sitting. ASNT's refund policy is blunt: after the Letter of Approval, refunds are not issued if you miss the one-year window, withdraw, transfer methods, or no-show. Rescheduling inside 48 hours is treated as a no-show. A name mismatch at the door has the same effect. Learn the process with the same seriousness you give flux leakage or skip distance.
All applications run through MyCert, which uses the same login as MyASNT. Membership is optional but must be in place before you start the application if you want the member fee. Create or update the account first, then open the NDT Level II application. Official walk-throughs live on the certification page and the examinations page.
Application: documents, payment, and the 2–4 week review
ASNT will not start review until payment is received in full, including any outstanding balance. Credit cards process immediately. Wire transfers and US-bank checks are allowed; if you choose pay-later, ASNT holds the application only 15 business days (3 calendar weeks) before discarding it. Payments are in US dollars. You are responsible for taxes, bank fees, and withholding.
In the application you list training and work experience that qualify you for the method. Documentation must be in English or accompanied by an English translation. Experience evidence ASNT lists as acceptable includes inspection logbooks or reports, employer or third-party certification records, human-resources records, and signed statements from the employer, the responsible Level III, or an ASNT NDT, ACCP, or 9712 Level III. Those records must state the level of qualification or Level II job duties and the number of days working at Level II or comparable responsibilities. Self-employed applicants provide signed statements from at least two customers. Certificates of training, non-employer qualifications, and Level I certificates are not accepted as experience proof.
Training evidence may include training certificates, completion letters, employer or third-party records, or signed statements from the trainer or an ASNT NDT, ACCP, or 9712 Level III. Method-by-method day counts (and the rule that one day is at least seven hours) belong in the eligibility chapter. Here, remember only that the reviewer is matching your uploads to the public tables, not taking a résumé at face value.
Before submit you sign the ASNT Code of Ethics and the confirmation statement. After submit, ASNT tells candidates to allow 2–4 weeks for review and to watch email for the Letter of Approval. If ASNT asks for more information and you do not provide it within one year of submission, fees are forfeited and you start over. If you do not meet requirements, ASNT notifies you by email. Refunds are not available if you withdraw; send a written withdrawal to the address ASNT publishes if you must stop, but do not expect money back.
Scheduling: one-year clock, Pearson VUE, and authorized centers
Do not book a seat before approval. After the Letter of Approval you schedule through MyCert. You must schedule and complete all examinations you applied for within one year of the letter date. Miss that window and you reapply. ASNT advises scheduling early because center capacity, not your study calendar, often sets the date.
Delivery is in-person CBT at Pearson VUE (a global network ASNT cites as 175-plus countries) or at an ASNT authorized exam center (AEC). No walk-in tests are provided. Publicly listed AECs include ASNT Houston (912 Gemini St., Houston, TX 77058), Applied Technical Services (ATS) in Marietta, Georgia, and ITQAN in Saudi Arabia. Confirm hours and booking rules with the center; they are not drop-in labs.
Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before the appointment, through MyCert or Pearson VUE. Inside 48 hours you lose the exam fees. Get the Pearson VUE confirmation email; if you do not receive it, the change did not take. Practical-exam reschedule rules (two calendar weeks at some AECs) apply to programs that include ASNT practicals, such as 9712 — not to this written CBT — but do not assume a kind exception if you booked the wrong program.
Identification, test-day rules, and language
Bring two original, valid forms of identification to the exam center:
- A primary government-issued ID with name and signature.
- A secondary ID with a name and signature or photo.
Both must be current and original. The name on both must match the name on the certification application and the MyASNT record. ASNT lists a current passport, driver's license, or state or government-issued identification card as valid photo ID, and a work ID with name and signature that matches the primary as another acceptable form. Photocopies, expired cards, and “my new married name is only on one license” fail this check.
If the ID name does not match the ASNT account, email certifications@asnt.org at least 72 hours before the exam to update the record. Do not wait until check-in.
Test-day rules from ASNT's FAQ and exam page:
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early. More than 15 minutes late may mean refused admission and a forfeited sitting.
- Expect a photo and signature at the center.
- Plan at least half a day.
- ASNT provides a scientific calculator. Do not bring your own; review the Pearson VUE / ASNT calculator demo beforehand.
- All examinations are in written US English. An online translation dictionary is available for NDT terminology in Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, UK English, and Arabic. ASNT does not guarantee perfect context matching.
- Breaks are allowed but the timer does not pause. Tell staff before you leave the room.
- Review the Pearson VUE CBT tutorial before you travel.
Retake rules and what happens after a pass
If you do not pass, you may reapply and retest after a 30-day waiting period. That wait is the NDT Level II rule on the official exam page; do not import a 90-day or six-month wait from another ASNT program. You must apply and pay the retake fee in MyCert ($370 member / $410 nonmember) and receive a new approval letter before you can schedule. Sitting on the old Letter of Approval after a fail is not authorized.
If you pass the required written exams and the application has no deficiencies, ASNT updates the MyASNT record. You or an employer can search the certificate holder directory. A digital badge follows by email; as noted in section 1.1, public pages currently disagree on whether that email is a one-to-two-week or four-to-six-week event, so treat the directory as the official status. Certification lasts five years and expires on the last day of the month on the badge. Renewal mechanics (36 of 60 months of Level II work, 60-day submit target, recert-by-exam skipping the general if you still hold a valid Level II) are covered in the fees and recertification section. The only retake-adjacent warning here: if you later fail a recertification exam, ASNT says you cannot then renew that cycle by application.
Realistic process scenarios
The 47-hour move. A candidate has a Tuesday 9:00 a.m. Pearson VUE appointment and tries to shift it Monday at 10:00 a.m. That is inside 48 hours. Pearson VUE will treat a late change or a no-show as a forfeited fee. The candidate still owes a retake application if they want a new seat, and the 30-day fail clock is irrelevant because they never sat — they burned the sitting.
Name mismatch. A technician's MyASNT record uses a maiden name; the driver's license uses a married name. Check-in fails. The 72-hour email rule existed to prevent this. After a refusal, the sitting is lost; fix the record, then reschedule inside the one-year Letter of Approval if that letter is still valid.
Late document. ASNT emails on day 10 asking for a supervisor signature that states Level II duties and days. The candidate ignores it for eleven months. At month twelve the application dies and fees are gone. The 2–4 week review only starts a clock; your response quality keeps the application alive.
Retake impatience. A candidate fails the 50-question MT general on 1 March and books another seat for 15 March on the original authorization. Unauthorized. Wait 30 days, submit the retake application, pay $370 / $410, wait for the new approval letter, then schedule. The specific exam, if passed, does not need to be repeated unless that is the exam you failed.
Print this sequence and keep it next to your IDs: MyCert complete and paid → 2–4 week review → Letter of Approval → schedule both CBTs inside one year → two matching original IDs → 48-hour change rule → 30-day retake with a new letter if you fail. That is the entire administrative exam.
