2.3 Fees, Validity, Recertification, and 529 Funding

Eligibility gets you into MyCert. Fees, the five-year clock, and the renewal path keep the credential alive. Candidates lose money by using stale fee folklore ($800 initial, $300 or $400 recert) that is not the current public schedule, or by waiting until the badge month to discover they cannot document 36 months of Level II work. This section uses the fees and rules ASNT publishes on the NDT Level II certification and recertification pages.

Why the Money and the Calendar Belong on the Same Page

ASNT will not review an application until all applicable fees are paid in full. You may pay by credit card, check, or wire transfer. A perfect experience packet sitting in MyCert with an unpaid invoice is not in review. The same payment-first rule applies at renewal.

The credential is not lifetime. ASNT NDT Level II certifications must be renewed every five years by application or recertified by exam. Your certification expires on the last day of the month listed on your digital badge—not necessarily on the exact calendar anniversary of your passing date. If the badge shows June, you are certified through 30 June of that year, and 1 July you are expired unless renewal already completed.

Current Initial, Add-On, and Retake Fees

Initial certification applicants must apply for and pass at least one General exam and one Specific industry exam. The package price below is per method (MT, PT, RT, UT, or VT).

Industry-sector add-on exams and retakes are available for General Industry or Pressure Equipment. You can take one sector or both. The add-on is how you pick up the second sector later without buying another full general-plus-specific package.

Joining ASNT before you apply is a straight $80 saving on the initial package ($820 − $740) and $40 on each add-on or retake ($410 − $370). Membership also discounts the renewal table below. Do not use outdated $800 / $300 / $400 figures as if they were current official fees.

A worked example: you want UT for Pressure Equipment as a member. You pay $740 for the initial general-plus-specific package. Six months later the shop also needs General Industry. You pay the $370 sector add-on, not another $740. If you fail the specific and must retake it, that retake is $370, not a second initial package.

Recertification Fees

When you renew, application fees are based on how many methods you are renewing. Exam-path fees are based on each listed exam type.

Recertification by application

Recertification by exam: $370 member / $410 nonmember per listed exam type.

The application path is almost always cheaper when you qualify for it. Three methods by application are $450 for a member. Three specific exams by the exam path are 3 × $370 = $1,110. Five methods by application are $580 member versus five exam sittings at $370 each ($1,850). Price is not the only factor—if you cannot document the 36-month work rule, you do not have the cheap path—but do not wander into the exam path by accident.

Validity, Early Windows, and the 60-Day Rule

Hold these four calendar facts together:

• Renew every five years.
• Expiration is the last day of the month on the digital badge.
• You may submit a renewal application up to six months before expiration.
• You must submit the renewal application and payment at least 60 days before expiration.

The six-month window is permission to start early. The 60-day mark is the latest responsible submit date. Submitting 10 days before month-end is how people expire while the file is still in processing. ASNT also states that when you renew by application or recertify by exam, you must complete all requirements and pass all examinations by your certification expiration date.

If the date has passed, you reapply as an initial applicant. That means the full initial fee table, the full eligibility documentation, and—on the exam path—the exams an initial candidate must take. Do not plan a heroic last-week sit.

After initial certification, ASNT typically issues the digital badge in 1–2 weeks. After recertification is processed, ASNT states you receive email to download a new digital badge in 4–6 weeks, and your MyASNT record updates to the new expiration date. Employers can verify you in the certificate holder directory in MyCert. The recert badge lag is why the 60-day submit rule exists: the shop may need a current badge before a job mobilization.

Renewal by Application

You can renew by submitting documentation of continued active employment for each Level II method certification you hold.

The requirement, in ASNT's words: maintain continued, active employment in nondestructive testing, performing Level II functions related to the methods you are renewing, for at least 36 months of the 60-month valid certification period without significant interruption.

Unpack the phrase so you do not fail a paperwork audit:

• Active employment means you were actually performing Level II work, not merely remaining on a recall list.
• Level II functions means duties at that level (set-up, calibration, interpretation, reporting, directing Level I work)—not only helper time.
• Related to the methods you are renewing means UT work does not renew MT if you are not performing MT Level II functions.
• 36 of 60 months is a majority of the cycle, not every month and not a single busy quarter.
• Without significant interruption is the continuity test. A short layoff is different from three years out of the method. ASNT provides a continued-employment documentation form; use it rather than a vague HR email.

Recertification by Examination

Use the exam path if you cannot document the 36-month rule, if you want to re-sit the papers, or if your employer requires a current exam. ASNT's rules are specific:

• If you hold at least one valid ASNT NDT Level II certificate at the time of examination, you do not retake the Level II general exam. You take only the relevant specific exams for each method in each applicable industry sector.
• You must retake and pass all required exams before the expiration date. After expiration you are an initial applicant again.
• If you fail an exam, you cannot renew by application.

That last bullet is a trap. A technician who almost qualified for the application path, then casually sits a specific "to stay sharp," and fails it, has closed the application door. Decide the path before you schedule. If you are on the exam path, treat every specific as a high-stakes paper: fail it and the cheaper application option is gone for that cycle.

Because the general exam is skipped when you still hold a valid Level II, recertification-by-exam study time belongs on codes, applications, and techniques for the sector you will sit—not on a full rewrite of method theory unless you need it to interpret the specific.

529 Funding for Credentialing Expenses

ASNT notes that expanded 529 College Savings Plans may now be used for professional credentialing expenses. Qualifying uses ASNT lists include:

• exam fees
• training enrollment
• study materials
• continuing education for renewal

A 529 is a tax-advantaged savings plan. Using it for ASNT NDT Level II does not change ASNT's fee table and does not create a separate ASNT discount. Coordinate with the plan administrator and a tax professional on what that specific plan will reimburse. Do not invent an IRS dollar cap or a published ASNT rebate as if it were part of the certification fee schedule.

Practical use: a family 529 that has leftover education funds can often pay the $740 member initial package, a method course that supplies the training-day certificates from section 2.1, and the study materials you use for the 50-question general and 40-question specific. Keep receipts that name the credentialing expense.

Planning Scenarios

Scenario 1 — Member versus nonmember initial. Priya is not a member and is about to pay $820 for PT. Membership dues are often less than the $80 exam gap once she also wants the Pressure Equipment add-on later ($40 more saved). She joins first, then applies.

Scenario 2 — Application versus exam math. Omar holds MT, PT, and VT. He has 40 months of documented Level II work in all three methods and no significant interruption. Renewal by application is $450 as a member. Recertification by three specific exams would be $1,110. He renews by application and submits 90 days before the badge month ends.

Scenario 3 — Failed recert exam. Chen cannot document 36 months, so Chen must recertify by exam. Chen holds a valid UT Level II, so Chen sits only the UT specific, not the general. Chen fails. Chen cannot switch to renewal by application after the fail and must pass the exam before expiration or reapply as initial.

Scenario 4 — Expired badge. A digital badge month ends 31 March. The technician submits nothing until 10 March. Even if ASNT could review in two weeks, the recert badge email can take 4–6 weeks. The 60-day rule existed to prevent this. If 31 March passes without completed renewal, the next step is an initial application.

Scenario 5 — 529 for a first method. A career-changer uses a 529 distribution for the UT training course (12 training days), the $740 exam package, and a current UT study guide. Those are the credentialing expense types ASNT lists. The 529 does not pay living expenses during the 120 method-experience days.

Map your method count, membership status, 36-month evidence, and badge month on one calendar. Pay the current published fee, not a number you remember from an old forum post.
