8.2 Ignition DTCs and Misfire Data

Key Takeaways

  • P030x identifies a misfiring cylinder or pattern, not a guaranteed ignition-coil failure.

  • Coil letters and circuit/feedback detection logic depend on the vehicle.

  • Mode $06 IDs, scaling and misfire windows must be interpreted using the applicable data definition.

Ignition DTCs and Misfire Data uses stated teaching examples. Actual pin assignments, dimensions, thresholds and procedures must come from the identified engine, component and diagnostic tool.

Interpreting Ignition Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) & Mode $06 Data (Task E.2)

Diagnostic Code / Data ParameterMonitoring Method & Trigger LogicPrimary Root Causes & Diagnostic Direction
P0300 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire)CKP angular velocity drop detected randomly across multiple cylindersShared system fault: low fuel rail pressure, contaminated fuel, intake plenum vacuum leak, dirty MAF sensor, stuck-open EGR valve, restricted exhaust backpressure, or unlearned/damaged CKP reluctor ring
P0301–P0310 (Cylinder 1–10 Specific Misfire)CKP angular velocity drop isolated consistently to one specific cylinder's power strokeSingle-cylinder fault: defective COP coil, carbon-tracked boot/plug, fouled/wide-gap spark plug, clogged/open fuel injector, or low mechanical compression/valvetrain failure on that cylinder
P0351–P0360 (Ignition Coil A–J Primary/Secondary Circuit)PCM monitors primary current feedback, IGT trigger circuit continuity, or IGF confirmation return signalA coil circuit or feedback fault as defined by the OEM on the primary side of the specified coil (coil letters must be mapped to cylinders using service information): unplugged coil connector, broken/shorted IGT or IGF wire, open B+ feed/ground, internal coil primary/igniter failure, or bad PCM driver. Do not assume the code identifies a plug, coil or PCM without the applicable circuit test.
OBD-II Service Mode \$06Raw current driving cycle misfire counter & Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) per cylinderCan help localize an intermittent misfire below the code-setting threshold; verify supported monitor/test IDs, scaling, counting period and enable criteria before interpreting a result

Differentiating P030x Combustion Misfires from P035x Primary Circuit Codes

The PCM detects P0300 through P0310 by timing the passage of crankshaft reluctor teeth via the CKP sensor. Every time a cylinder fires properly, the power stroke accelerates the crankshaft slightly; when a cylinder misfires, the crankshaft momentarily slows down. A catalyst-damaging misfire can trigger a flashing MIL, while an emissions-threshold misfire follows the applicable fault-maturation strategy. The acceptable misfire rate, counting window, enabling conditions and lamp response are calibration-specific. A flashing MIL calls for reducing load and following the vehicle safety instructions; do not continue a severe misfire solely to collect more counts.

By contrast, P0351 through P0360 identify the monitored coil circuit designated A through J. Read the manufacturer's definition and any subcode to determine what was actually detected. The letter is a circuit designation; it must be mapped to the installed engine rather than assumed to match a cylinder number. A two-wire coil switched by an external driver and a smart coil with an internal driver require different tests. Some designs use an ignition trigger (IGT) and a separate ignition confirmation (IGF) signal; other designs lack that confirmation circuit. Pin count alone does not establish the switching arrangement, trigger voltage or current limit. Check the schematic, expected waveform and loaded power/ground paths before condemning the coil or controller. Injector shutoff may protect the catalyst on a supported strategy, but it is not guaranteed by the generic code label.

Tip

Using Mode \$06 for Under-Threshold Grade-Climbing Misfires: When a driver reports a transient stumble while cresting a highway grade with a loaded truck, the misfire often stops as soon as the road levels out—before the PCM accumulates enough misfire events in a 200- or 1,000-revolution window to log a pending P030x code. Open OBD-II Service Mode \$06 and select the supported cylinder misfire results using the vehicle and scan-tool definitions. An exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) retains weighted history; it is different from a current-cycle counter. A high result suggests where to investigate, but does not establish an ignition root cause without checking fuel delivery, mechanical sealing and crankshaft-signal integrity. A zero result after reset or monitor disablement does not prove that the complaint is absent.

Worked Example: Diagnostic Scenario: High-Load V10 Grade-Climb Misfire Without Active DTCs

In this fictional service example, a Class 6 stake truck (26,000 lb GVWR) with a V10 gasoline engine bucks while climbing a 6% grade at 2,100 RPM, but runs smoothly in the shop with zero active or pending DTCs. The supplied vehicle/tool definitions map cylinder misfire results to Monitor IDs \$A2 through \$AB, identify \$A8 as Cylinder 7, and specify a 0.054 in. plug gap. These are example inputs, not a claim that every V10 uses those IDs or that this is a published Triton service specification:

  1. Mode \$06 Data Inspection: Cylinders 1–6 and 8–10 show 0 current-cycle misfires and an EWMA count of 0–1. Monitor ID \$A8 (Cylinder #7) displays 48 current-cycle misfires and an EWMA count of 19.
  2. Physical Secondary Inspection: The technician removes the COP assembly from Cylinder #7. Inside the lower silicone boot is a pinhole burn mark and chalky white corona residue; removing the Cylinder #7 spark plug reveals a 0.072 in. worn electrode gap (spec 0.054 in.) and a thin black carbon track running down the white porcelain insulator.
  3. Root Cause & Repair: The worn gap and carbon track support secondary insulation breakdown under increased cylinder pressure; a misfire counter alone cannot establish a particular firing voltage. The technician confirms the leakage with the approved ignition test, replaces the damaged plug and boot, and follows the specified plug torque and boot-lubrication procedure. After checking normal contribution, the technician safely verifies the repair under representative conditions and confirms that the enabled current-cycle monitor records 0 new misfires. The historical EWMA need not immediately return to zero.

Applied Diagnostic Check

Separate current misfire evidence from learned crankshaft errors. An irregular target signal or incomplete required profile learning can disturb the monitor even when combustion feels smooth. Inspect the correlation, relevant profile status and supported diagnostic procedure before treating every counter increment as a failed plug. Conversely, a real intermittent misfire may be below the threshold that matures a code. Capture it under the driver-reported conditions and compare the suspect cylinder's waveform or contribution. The presence or absence of a code changes the available evidence, but it does not make a physical ignition fault impossible.

Checking Code Definitions and Monitor Evidence

Retrieve the complete code, its status and any failure record before clearing it. A generic code label can be less specific than the OEM diagnostic definition, especially when feedback or a subcode is present. Confirm how the coil letter maps to a cylinder and which connector pins carry power, control, ground or confirmation. Some coils have no separate confirmation wire. Do not apply an IGT/IGF test to a circuit that lacks those signals.

Interpret monitor results using their scaling and recorded conditions. A stored count can belong to a previous drive rather than the present idle. Compare a new capture under the complaint conditions with the earlier record, and account for cleared counters or an incomplete profile learn. After correcting the verified fault, check both cylinder contribution and the coil circuit result; clearing P030x does not by itself prove the underlying circuit repair is complete.

Test Your Knowledge

For this example, service information maps Coil D to Cylinder 4 and defines P0354 as a primary circuit/feedback fault. Technician A says P0304 alone proves the coil has an open primary winding. Technician B says the primary power, ground, control and feedback circuits should be tested, and injector shutoff may protect the catalyst. Who is correct?
