ASE P2 Exam Overview

The ASE P2 Automobile Parts Specialist certification validates knowledge needed to work competently at a retail or jobber automobile parts counter. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) publishes the official test specifications and task list in the ASE Parts Specialist Study Guide. Use that outline—not third-party summaries—when you plan study time.

Exam Structure and Logistics

The initial P2 certification test includes 85 total multiple-choice questions. Of those, 75 are scored and 10 are unscored research (pretest) questions used to develop future forms. You will not be told which items are research questions, so answer every question. ASE allots 90 minutes for the P2 certification test—slightly more than one minute per item on average.

ASE also lists the P2R recertification test at 38 questions and 45 minutes. Recertification tests do not add the ten research questions used on initial certification forms.

Scheduling, Delivery, and Fees

Register and pay through your myASE account, then schedule an appointment. The initial P2 certification test is delivered by computer at Prometric test centers. ASE also offers remote online proctoring and other pathways for eligible recertification candidates; confirm which delivery option applies to your credential status on the official ASE site before you assume a single channel.

Published ASE fees for general certification tests (2026 registration page) are a $34 registration fee per order plus $62 per general test. A single-test P2 order is therefore about $96 before any applicable sales tax—not a flat "$59" figure sometimes seen in outdated secondary sources. Always verify live pricing inside myASE because ASE can revise fees.

Passing Score

ASE uses criterion-referenced scoring set by industry subject-matter experts. The exact raw number of correct answers required is not published as a fixed public percentage, and difficulty can vary slightly by form. Results are reported as pass/fail with content-area feedback.

Experience and Recertification Requirements

Passing the test is only one half of certification. For Parts Specialist credentials, ASE requires two years of work experience specifically related to parts counter work—not hands-on automotive repair technician experience. Repair-shop wrench time does not satisfy the P1/P2 experience category.

You may register and take the test before you finish the experience requirement. If you pass first, ASE records a test-passed status and issues the certificate only after the experience documentation is approved. Relevant formal training may substitute for up to half of the experience requirement (up to one year of the two-year total); you still need documented on-the-job parts-counter experience for the remainder. Submit documentation through ASE's work-experience process (workexp.ase.com).

The P2 credential is valid for five years. Maintain it by passing the corresponding recertification test (P2R) before expiration—or by another ASE-authorized renewal path if you become eligible for one.

Content Areas and Weights

Every scored question maps to the official P2 task list. The 2026 ASE specifications weight the 75 scored items as follows:

Vehicle Systems Knowledge alone is more than half the scored exam and includes fifteen sub-areas—from engine mechanical parts through brakes, HVAC, electrical, battery/charging/starting (including hybrid/EV context), and miscellaneous fasteners, hose/tubing, chemicals, and accessories. Weight study time to the blueprint: master systems identification first, then protect the remaining 47% with operations, sales, catalog, VIN, inventory, and merchandising drills.

How to Use the Official Task List

ASE states that every question relates to one or more tasks on the official list, but not every task appears on the form you see. Treat the task list as a checklist:

1. Mark each General Operations and Customer Relations task you can perform without hesitation (discounts, returns, phone triage, related-sales closes).
2. For each Vehicle Systems sub-area, practice identifying major components, stating why they are replaced, naming related fluids/chemicals, and giving basic install/warranty talking points.
3. Drill Vehicle Identification and Catalog skills with real VIN decode and supersession look-ups until they are automatic.
4. Finish with Inventory and Merchandising tasks—lost-sale reporting, core handling, stock rotation, and display strategy—so the small-percentage areas do not become unexpected misses.

Registration Windows and Appointment Discipline

ASE publishes seasonal registration windows (winter, spring, summer, fall). After you purchase a test in myASE, you typically have a limited window to schedule and sit before the purchase expires—confirm the live policy in your account. Cancel or reschedule according to ASE/Prometric rules; last-minute changes near the appointment date may be blocked. Bring required identification to the Prometric center and expect a secure CBT interface with flag-for-review and on-screen timing tools.
