1. Exit Access

That portion of a means of egress system that leads from any occupied point in a building to an exit. Exit access components are generally unprotected or minimally protected and include occupied rooms, aisles, access corridors, and intervening spaces. Travel distance and common path of travel are actively measured across the exit access until the occupant crosses the threshold into a rated exit enclosure.

2. Exit

That portion of a means of egress system that is separated from other interior spaces of a building by fire-resistance-rated construction and opening protectives to provide a protected path of travel toward the exit discharge. Once an occupant crosses into an exit, the level of protection cannot be compromised. Permitted exit typologies include:

  • Interior Exit Stairways & Ramps: Enclosed with 1-hour fire barriers in buildings under 4 stories, and 2-hour fire barriers in buildings 4 stories or more.
  • Exit Passageways: Fire-rated horizontal tunnels connecting interior exit stairs to the building exterior, maintaining the same fire-resistance rating as the stairways they serve.
  • Horizontal Exits: A 2-hour fire barrier dividing a story into two independent refuge compartments, providing an immediate area of rescue assistance (may serve up to 50% of the required exit capacity of a story).
  • Exterior Exit Doors at Ground Level: Direct doorways opening to grade.

3. Exit Discharge

That portion of a means of egress system between the termination of an exit and a public way. Exit discharge typically occurs exterior to the building footprint via exit courts, exterior stairs, or pedestrian walkways. Under IBC Section 1028.1 (The 50% Lobby Discharge Rule), a maximum of 50% of the total number of exits and 50% of total exit capacity are permitted to discharge through an interior ground-floor vestibule or lobby, provided:

  1. The lobby is protected throughout by an automatic fire sprinkler system;
  2. The lobby is separated from lower basement levels by fire-rated construction; and
  3. The path from the exit stair termination to the exterior exit door is continuous, unobstructed, and readily visible.

The Public Way

The ultimate legal terminus of all egress paths is the public way—defined as a street, alley, or other parcel of land open to the outside air, permanently deeded to the public, having a clear width and height of not less than 10 feet.


Occupant Load Calculations (IBC Table 1004.5)

The design occupant load establishes the human density used to size egress corridors, stairways, exit doors, and plumbing fixtures. Occupant load is calculated by dividing floor area by the square-foot-per-occupant factors in IBC Table 1004.5.
