The equating process (applied to API 1169)

API explicitly applies an equating process to four exams — 510, 570, 653, and 1169. Equating adjusts the raw-to-scaled conversion to compensate for differences in difficulty between exam forms, so the passing scaled score always represents the minimum knowledge required while the absolute knowledge standard is held constant. In API's own framing, two candidates with the same scaled score on different forms will have demonstrated the same knowledge. This is the mechanism behind the statement that "400 always means the same thing," and it is why no fixed raw-percent cutoff exists — equating, not a fixed raw count, is what holds the standard steady.

Why not a raw-percent cutoff?

A raw-percent cutoff ("you need 70% to pass") sounds simple, but it is unfair across forms. If Form A happens to contain harder items than Form B, a 70% on Form A reflects more competency than a 70% on Form B. Scaled scoring corrects for this:

• A harder form may require fewer raw correct answers to reach 400.
• An easier form may require more raw correct answers to reach 400.
• Either way, a 400 means the same thing.

This is why API does not publish a fixed number of correct answers required to pass. There is no published raw-percent cutoff, and any third-party claim like "you need 70 out of 100 scored items" is not official.

The 400 Passing Mark

The passing score is 400. Score reports show your scaled score. If you score 400 or above, you pass. If you score below 400, you fail and receive diagnostic feedback to guide your next attempt.

What the score report shows

A passing report confirms your pass and your scaled score. A failing report typically includes:

• Your scaled score (below 400).
• Diagnostic feedback by knowledge area — a relative indication of where you were stronger or weaker, mapped to the Body of Knowledge (BOK) areas. This is not a per-question breakdown.
• No list of which specific questions you missed. API does not release item-level results.

Use the diagnostic feedback to reallocate study time before a retake. If, for example, you are weak in "Installation Construction," spend your next study cycle there.

How Results Are Delivered (Instant Scoring)

Since April 2024, API 1169 has been part of API's instant scoring rollout. The result-delivery sequence is:

• Email from Prometric within 24 hours of testing. Prometric emails your final score report to the address on file; this report shows your converted scaled score, not your number of correct answers.
• Online at scorereports.prometric.com. You can also view your score report online using your Prometric exam confirmation number.
• ICP Portal within 3 business days. Final results are uploaded to your API ICP Portal / e-Profile within three business days, and certifications are issued for applications without deficiencies.

Prometric staff do not hand you a printed pass/fail sheet at the test center. If your score has not appeared in the ICP Portal after three business days, contact the API ICP Exam Coordinator (ICPExamCoordinator@api.org) rather than rescheduling — a missing portal entry is usually a processing delay, not a fail.

No Published Pass Rate

API does not publish an official pass rate for API 1169. Any pass-rate figures you see on third-party prep sites are self-reported by their customers or fabricated. Do not calibrate your readiness against an unofficial pass rate — calibrate against the BOK and your performance on timed practice sets.

Common Scoring Traps

• Converting 400 to a percentage. 400 is a scaled point on a scale, not 400 out of something. Do not try to reverse-engineer a raw-percent cutoff.
• Comparing forms. If a colleague says they passed with "only 70% raw," that figure is either invented or form-specific. It does not transfer to your form.
• Item-level feedback. You will not learn which specific questions you missed. The diagnostic is by knowledge area only.
• Stale result-delivery expectations. Older prep materials say results arrive only through the ICP Portal days later. Since April 2024 instant scoring, Prometric emails your report within 24 hours and uploads final results to the ICP Portal within 3 business days — do not assume silence at the 12-hour mark means a problem.
• Stale pass-rate claims. Prep providers sometimes advertise "90% pass rates." Treat these as marketing, not API data.

Tips for Using Your Score Report

• If you pass: save the confirmation. Your certification term starts from your pass date (subject to API's final processing).
• If you fail: map the diagnostic feedback to the BOK areas, rebuild your study plan around the weakest area, and schedule a retake only after you can consistently hit target accuracy on timed practice sets covering that area.
• Retake policy: confirm current retake rules and any waiting period through the API ICP portal before rescheduling with Prometric.
