Eligibility Pathways & Application

Quick Answer: API 1169 eligibility is experience-based, earned within the last 20 years, and met through one of five pathways. Pathways 1-3 are pure experience (3-5 years depending on work type and education). Pathways 4-5 require a qualifying certification (AWS, CWB, AMPP, API, ASNT Level II+, CGSB, PCN, or ISO 9712 NDE) in addition to experience. All documentation must be uploaded in English through the API ICP Portal.

Unlike exams that require a specific degree or a single fixed experience bar, API 1169 uses a matrix of five pathways. The pathway that fits you depends on the kind of work you did, your education, and whether you hold a qualifying certification. All experience must have occurred within the last 20 years.

The 20-Year Recency Rule

Only experience earned within the most recent 20 years counts. Older experience — even if extensive — does not qualify. If your pipeline or inspection career started more than 20 years ago and you have been in a different field since, confirm that you have qualifying activity inside the recency window before you apply.

The Five Pathways

Reading the matrix

• Education columns collapse three categories: a BS degree, a 2-year technical degree, and 2 years of technical military service all count as the "higher-education" tier and reduce the required years.
• A high school diploma, GED, or no formal education places you in the standard-experience tier, which requires more years.
• Pathway 4 has a hybrid option: 4 years of general oil & gas non-inspection work including at least 1 year of pipeline-specific work plus a qualifying cert, or 6 years plus a qualifying cert regardless of education.
• Pathway 5 always requires a qualifying cert — 5 years (higher-education tier) or 8 years (any/no education).

Qualifying Certifications (Pathways 4 and 5)

Pathways 4 and 5 require a qualifying certification in addition to experience. Acceptable certs include:

• AWS — American Welding Society certifications
• CWB — Canadian Welding Bureau certifications
• AMPP Coatings Inspector or AMPP Senior Coatings Inspector (formerly NACE/SSPC)
• API — other API certifications (e.g., API 510, 570, 653, QUTE/QUTO)
• ASNT Level II or higher — American Society for Nondestructive Testing
• CGSB — Canadian General Standards Board NDE certifications
• PCN — Personal Certification in NDT (ISO 9712 scheme)
• Any ISO 9712 accredited NDE certification

If your certification is not on this list, do not assume it qualifies. Confirm with API before you apply.

Application and Documentation

Applications are submitted through the API ICP Portal. You must upload:

• Experience documentation — employer letters, contracts, or records that show the type, duration, and scope of your work. Each employment entry should connect your role to the pathway you are claiming.
• Education documentation — degrees, diplomas, or military training records that place you in the higher-education tier (if you claim it).
• Qualifying certification documentation (Pathways 4 and 5 only) — a current certificate or wallet card from the issuing body.
• English translations — all documents not in English must be accompanied by an English translation. API does not evaluate foreign-language originals unaided.

Practical tips for a clean application

• Map each job to a pathway. Reviewers should not have to guess how your history satisfies, say, Pathway 3. State it explicitly in the experience narrative.
• Mind expiration dates on certs. A lapsed qualifying cert may not satisfy Pathway 4 or 5. Verify currency before you submit.
• Do not double-count. The same job cannot simultaneously be "pipeline inspection" and "non-inspection pipeline" — pick the pathway that best fits the bulk of the work.
• Plan for review time. API reviews documentation before authorizing you to schedule with Prometric. Submit well before your target testing window.

Common Eligibility Traps

• Misclassifying inspection work. General oil & gas inspection (Pathway 2) is not the same as pipeline inspection (Pathway 1). If you inspected pressure vessels but never pipelines, Pathway 1 does not apply — Pathway 2 might.
• Forgetting the pipeline-specific year. Pathway 4's 4-year option requires at least 1 year of pipeline-specific work inside the 4 years. General oil & gas work alone is not enough without the 6-year fallback.
• Stale certs. A qualifying cert that expired last month is not qualifying. Renew before applying if needed.
• Pre-20-year experience. Experience from 22 years ago does not count even if it was pipeline inspection. Stay inside the 20-year window.
