Arithmetic Reasoning FoundationsYou are here
Build fluency with word problems — ratios, percents, time/distance/rate, work, and mixture problems. AR is the single highest-weighted AFQT component (counts once at full weight).
Word Knowledge & Vocabulary Roots
Memorize 300+ high-frequency AFQT vocabulary words. Learn Latin/Greek roots (bene-, mal-, -volent, mono-, dict-) so unfamiliar words become guessable. WK feeds into VE, which is doubled in the AFQT formula.
Paragraph Comprehension Strategies
Practice main-idea, detail, vocabulary-in-context, and inference questions on 50–150-word passages. Read question first, then scan passage. PC also feeds the doubled VE composite.
Mathematics Knowledge & Practice Tests
Drill algebra (linear and quadratic), geometry (area/volume/Pythagorean), exponents, factoring, and slope-intercept. Then take 2–3 timed full-length AFQT practice tests under exam conditions.
Can You Take the AFQT Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •AFQT scores are reported as percentiles (1–99) normed against the 1997 Profile of American Youth (18–23-year-olds)
- •Branch minimums: Army/Marines 31, Air Force/Space Force 36, Coast Guard 40, Navy 31–35
- •AFQT is a score, not a separate test — it is computed from four ASVAB subtests (AR, WK, PC, MK)
- •AFQT scores remain valid for enlistment purposes for two years after the test date
