1.2 AFQT Meaning and Study Priorities

Executive Summary: AFQT is a percentile score derived from four ASVAB aptitude areas. It is not a separate battery, a classroom percent-correct grade, or a universal in-service passing score.

The four AFQT inputs

The official ASVAB scoring page identifies these standard-score inputs:

1. Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
2. Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
3. Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
4. Word Knowledge (WK)

Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension are combined into Verbal Expression (VE) through official standard-score conversion procedures. Technical documentation expresses the AFQT composite as:

The program then converts the composite to a percentile from 1 through 99. You cannot reproduce an official percentile by adding raw practice-test totals.

Percentile interpretation

The current reference group is the nationally representative sample of 18- to 23-year-olds used in the 1997 norming study. An AFQT of 50 means the examinee scored as well as or better than 50 percent of that reference group; it does not mean 50 percent of questions were correct.

These are official score bands. They do not, by themselves, state whether an in-service member qualifies for a particular program.

Study use

• To strengthen AFQT inputs, practice vocabulary and passage comprehension together with arithmetic word problems and high-school mathematics.
• Use standard-score feedback from an authorized report when available; do not treat practice percent-correct as an official standard score.
• For a career move, obtain the current program requirement first. A Service may use its own composites and additional criteria rather than AFQT alone.
• Do not substitute accession recruiting thresholds, historical program cutoffs, or a third-party line-score chart for a current in-service instruction.
