9.4 Skill-Related Fitness Components

A client can have healthy blood pressure and a decent 1-mile walk and still trip on a curb. Another can squat well in the sagittal plane and still look lost when you say “turn around on that cone.” Skill-related fitness is how the nervous system aims the health-related qualities you already programmed. Load/Speed is allowed to include these qualities. It is not required to dump an agility ladder on a Base-phase walker.

Health-related components predict the ability to do daily work, manage disease risk, and keep a body composition the client cares about. Skill-related components predict the ability to start, stop, turn, catch, stabilize, and produce force quickly. A 70-year-old who wants to garden and not fall is training skill-related balance and coordination for a health outcome. A soccer player training agility is using the same family of qualities for a performance outcome. The principles match. The drills do not.

Exam trap: “Body composition is skill-related because athletes care about it” or “balance is only a health component.” Balance is skill-related even when the goal is fall reduction. Body composition stays on the health-related list.

What Each Skill Component Actually Is

Balance is control of the center of gravity over the base of support. Static balance is stillness (single-leg stance, tandem stance). Dynamic balance is control while the base or the COG is moving (a step-down, a reach, gait). Functional Training already owns the first doses. Skill programming progresses the sensory and task challenge: narrower base, head turns, a reach, a less stable surface, then — only if safe — reduced vision. A wobble that the client cannot save is too much challenge, not “better balance training.”

Agility is the ability to change direction or speed while keeping control. It is not the same as straight-line speed. A cone weave the client can still brake and turn through is agility. A panic shuffle that dumps the knee is a Movement leak at speed.

Speed is the ability to move the body or a limb quickly through a distance, usually in a fairly straight path. Acceleration, upright sprint mechanics, and the ability to repeat a fast burst without the pattern collapsing all live here. Most general-fitness clients need only a little of it — a quicker sit-to-stand, a short jog-across-the-street capacity — not a 40-yard testing protocol.

Power is force × velocity. It is the skill of producing force fast: a medicine-ball chest pass, a kettlebell swing the client already owns as a hinge, a squat jump only after the squat is clean. Power is a Load/Speed resident. It is not a day-one box jump for a new walker.

Reactivity (reaction time) is how quickly the client starts a correct response after a cue — a clap, a color, a tossed ball, a partner’s cut. Closed drills (the client knows the pattern) build coordination first. Open drills (the cue is late or unknown) add reactivity. Older adults can train a simple “step when I say now.” Athletes can train a cut on a visual cue. Both are reactivity; the chaos budget differs.

Coordination is the ability to combine movements into a smooth, accurate sequence — hand-eye, foot-eye, contralateral limb timing. A march with an opposite-arm swing, a step-and-reach, a catch on a lunge. Ugly coordination is often a sign you stacked too many tasks, not that the client “has no athleticism.”

Quickness, in SAQ marketing, is the ability to make a first-step or short-space adjustment rapidly. ACE’s IFT Load/Speed language lists speed, agility, quickness, and power together for athletic goals. On the exam, treat quickness as the industry cousin of speed, agility, and reactivity — not as a seventh official health component.

When to Introduce Skill Work

Follow the IFT gates:

  1. Functional competence — the client can keep a reasonably quiet trunk, a usable foot, and a level pelvis in simple static and slow dynamic tasks.
  2. Movement competence — the five patterns that the drill will use are owned at body weight. A lateral shuffle needs a single-leg / frontal-plane pattern that does not valgus. A rotational throw needs a lumbar spine that stays a platform.
  3. A strength base before high-force or high-speed power and plyometrics, so the client can produce and absorb force. ACE’s July 2020 Load/Speed section is explicit on this point.
  4. Goal relevance. An older adult’s skill block may be entirely balance and coordination. A field-sport athlete adds agility, speed, power, and reactivity. A Base-phase general-fitness client may never need a ladder.

Cardio phase still does not gate this by itself. A Performance runner with a collapsing single-leg pattern does not get bounding drills. A Base walker with a rock-solid tandem stance can do a slow step-and-reach.

Landings are part of power and agility. If the client cannot stick a quiet landing from a 2-inch step, they are not ready for a box jump. Cue soft knees that still track, a quiet trunk, and the ability to stop. Stopping is a skill. So is saying “that height is too high.”

Surface and footwear matter. A slick court, an uneven trail, or socks on turf changes the risk of the same drill. Virtual coaching needs even more conservative choices: no reactive lateral cuts away from the camera, no hops near coffee tables.

Older-Adult Balance Versus Athlete Agility — Same Principles, Different Programs

Same principles: control the center of gravity, own the pattern slowly, add one challenge at a time, keep Functional work in the warm-up, stop for pain or dizziness, and never load or speed a leak.

Different programming:

An older adult whose goal is “get out of a chair and not fall in the bathroom” needs balance, coordination, and a little power (a faster sit-to-stand is power). Sessions look like: sit-to-stand to a high seat, tandem stance with a fingertip on the counter, a slow step over a line, a reach to a shelf, maybe a light medicine-ball chest pass. Surfaces stay predictable. Spot close. Recheck medications and lighting as part of fall-risk thinking, and refer when dizziness, neuropathy, or a recent unexplained fall exceeds your scope. You do not need an agility ladder. You do need enough challenge that the nervous system adapts, not so much that a missed step becomes an emergency-department visit.

An athlete whose goal is a quicker cut needs agility, speed, reactivity, and power on top of already-owned Movement patterns and a strength base. Sessions can include planned cuts, then cued cuts, short accelerations, and low-to-moderate plyometrics with crisp landings. You still regress the moment the knee caves or the lumbar spine becomes the rotator. You still keep Functional work. You do not copy the older-adult tandem stance as the entire program, and you do not copy the athlete’s reactive 5-10-5 as the older adult’s homework.

Worked example — two clients, one principle:

  • Elena, 71, cleared, mild kyphosis, single-leg stance 4 seconds with a hip drop. Skill block: kitchen-counter tandem stance, step-touch to a taped line, sit-to-stand with a pause. No hops. Muscular phase remains Functional/Movement. Cardio can be Base walking.
  • Marcus, 24, collegiate club soccer, clean single-leg and landing screens, strength base present. Skill block: 5-yard planned cuts, then a visual-cued cut, then two low hurdle hops with a stick landing. If the last hop valgus, the hop leaves the program today. Cardio may already be Fitness or Performance; that does not excuse the valgus.

Both programs respect IFT. Only one looks like “sports performance.” That is the point of K9.

Where Skill Work Sits on the Session Card

After movement prep, skill drills that need a fresh nervous system usually come before heavy fatigue — especially speed, agility, and power. A long Zone 2 block first will make the cuts sloppy. Strength can follow skill. Conditioning can finish. Cool-down still happens. For an older adult, the “skill” block may be the main muscular session.

Volume stays small. A few high-quality repeats beat a 20-minute ladder grind that grooves bad feet. Recover between power and speed reps until the next one still looks like the first.
