Why Collect Dietary Information at Intake
You are not calculating a personal calorie target. You are looking for information that changes readiness, risk, and later program design:
- Very low energy intake relative to the training volume the client is requesting
- Fasting windows that collide with morning sessions
- Hydration habits before heat or long sessions
- Gastrointestinal distress around exercise
- Caffeine, alcohol, and supplement stacks the client already uses
- Cultural or religious eating patterns that affect session timing
- Red flags for disordered eating
General education you may share later is anchored to named public sources: the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (USDA/HHS) and MyPlate, plus materials created by an RDN or a government agency. You may discuss principles of healthy eating, food groups, essential nutrients, lifecycle differences, and pre- and post-workout fueling and hydration in general terms. You may not turn those guidelines into a custom seven-day menu with gram targets you invented.
ACE also lists, as in-scope discussion topics for professionals with accredited nutrition education, the actions of nutrients, effects of deficiencies or excesses, and information about nutrients contained in foods or supplements. Discussion is not the same as prescription. "Creatine is found in animal foods and is a commonly studied supplement" is education. "Buy this brand and take this dose" is out of scope.

A research-style food-frequency questionnaire estimates usual intake over months. It is not required for ACE-CPT practice and is easy to over-interpret. If a clinic provides one, treat it as a conversation starter, not a lab result.

Low-carbohydrate patterns range from moderately reduced carbohydrate to very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic approaches. Potential exercise impacts:
- Muscle glycogen is a primary fuel for high-intensity and glycolytic work. Lower carbohydrate availability can reduce quality of intervals, heavy strength sets, and repeated sprints
- Early adaptation may include fatigue, headache, and reduced training tolerance
- Glycogen binds water; a rapid drop on the scale is often water, not fat. Do not celebrate it as proof the program is working
- Sodium, potassium, and magnesium losses are commonly reported on stricter low-carb patterns; pair this with hydration questions
- You do not put a client on keto. You ask what they are already doing and whether sessions feel flat, crampy, or dizzy
None of these patterns is automatically good or bad on the exam. The scored skill is matching the pattern to possible exercise effects and staying inside scope.
Scope Line You Must Be Able to Recite
In scope for an ACE-CPT during dietary intake:
- Ask what the client usually eats and drinks, including caffeine, alcohol, and supplements they already take

Dietary information sits beside medical history, not above it. A client on a low-carb plan who also takes a diuretic is a hydration and blood-pressure story. A vegan endurance athlete with heavy fatigue may need a medical workup, not a pep talk about iron skillets. A DASH follower with newly prescribed blood-pressure medicine needs the medicine list in the health-history file before you celebrate their produce intake.
