About MN Boiler Operator

Minnesota's boiler engineer exams are administered by the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). Minnesota law divides engineers into four classes: Chief, First Class and Second Class (each in Grade A, B or C) and Special. Grade C covers low-pressure boilers, Grade B all boilers, and Grade A adds steam engines and turbines. Special needs only an application; higher classes need a notarized affidavit of operating experience. Every exam has a $50 application and exam fee, a 2.5-hour time limit and a 70% passing score.

How much does the Minnesota boiler engineer exam cost?

The Minnesota boiler engineer exam has a $50 application fee that includes the exam, for every license from Special through Chief. You pay it with your application, and it is not refundable. After you pass, you pay a separate two-year license fee (for example, $20 for Special, $40 for First and Second Class, and $80 for Chief).

What are the Minnesota boiler engineer license classes and grades?

Minnesota law divides boiler engineers into four classes: Special, Second Class, First Class and Chief. Second, First and Chief each come in Grade C (low-pressure boilers), Grade B (all boilers) and Grade A (boilers plus steam engines and turbines). The class sets the horsepower you may take charge of: Special 50, Second 100, First 500 and Chief unlimited. Each license has its own written exam.
