The National Benchmark Test - Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) is a three-hour, all-multiple-choice university-placement test administered by CETAP at the University of Cape Town for the National Benchmark Tests Project. It combines Academic Literacy (academic reading and reasoning) and Quantitative Literacy (reasoning with numbers, graphs and data) in one session. It is criterion-referenced: there is no single pass mark, and results are reported in Proficient, Intermediate and Basic benchmark categories for each part. The 2026 AQL fee is about R195 (free for NSFAS-qualifying applicants), and many South African universities require it for first-year admission and placement. About the NBT AQL Exam
The National Benchmark Test - Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) is a standardised, all-multiple-choice university-placement test for prospective first-year applicants to South African universities. It is developed by the National Benchmark Tests Project (NBTP) and administered by the Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP) at the University of Cape Town. The AQL combines two parts in one three-hour session: Academic Literacy, which measures the academic reading and reasoning skills needed for tertiary study; and Quantitative Literacy, which measures the ability to reason with numbers, graphs and data in real-world contexts. The test is criterion-referenced, so instead of a single pass mark it places each candidate in a Proficient, Intermediate or Basic benchmark category for each part. Universities and faculties use these results for admission, placement and academic support decisions.
Assessment
A single combined multiple-choice test with two parts: Academic Literacy (academic reading and reasoning) and Quantitative Literacy (quantitative reasoning from data, graphs and word problems). Results are reported separately for each part.
Time Limit
Three hours of writing time for the combined AQL session.
Passing Score
No simple pass mark. The AQL is criterion-referenced and reports performance in three benchmark categories - Proficient, Intermediate and Basic - for Academic Literacy and for Quantitative Literacy. Each university sets its own admission and placement requirements using these results.
Exam Fee
Approximately R195 for AQL only in the 2026 cycle (about R390 with the Mathematics test). Free for NSFAS-qualifying applicants. Paid via EasyPay before booking. (Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP), University of Cape Town, for the National Benchmark Tests Project (NBTP))
