1A particle moves along the x-axis with position given by x(t) = 2t^3 - 9t^2 + 12t - 4, where x is in meters and t is in seconds. At what times t >= 0 is the particle instantaneously at rest?
A.t = 1 s and t = 2 s
B.t = 0.5 s and t = 3 s
C.t = 1.5 s only
D.t = 2 s and t = 4 s
Explanation: Velocity is the first derivative of position: v(t) = dx/dt = 6t^2 - 18t + 12. Setting v(t) = 0 gives 6(t^2 - 3t + 2) = 0, which factors into 6(t - 1)(t - 2) = 0. Thus, the particle is instantaneously at rest at t = 1 s and t = 2 s.
2A projectile is launched from ground level with initial speed v0 = 50 m/s at an angle theta = 53 degrees above the horizontal (take g = 10 m/s^2, sin 53 = 0.8, cos 53 = 0.6). What is the total horizontal range of the projectile before it hits the ground?
A.120 m
B.240 m
C.180 m
D.300 m
Explanation: The initial velocity components are v0x = 50 * cos 53 = 30 m/s and v0y = 50 * sin 53 = 40 m/s. The time of flight is T = 2 * v0y / g = 2 * 40 / 10 = 8 s. The horizontal range is R = v0x * T = 30 m/s * 8 s = 240 m.
3A block of mass m = 4 kg sits on a rough inclined plane tilted at angle theta = 30 degrees to the horizontal. The coefficient of static friction is mu_s = 0.6 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is mu_k = 0.4 (take g = 10 m/s^2, cos 30 = 0.866, sin 30 = 0.500). What is the magnitude of the frictional force acting on the block?
A.13.9 N
B.20.0 N
C.20.8 N
D.34.6 N
Explanation: The component of gravitational force down the incline is F_gx = m * g * sin 30 = 4 * 10 * 0.5 = 20.0 N. The maximum static friction force is f_s,max = mu_s * m * g * cos 30 = 0.6 * 4 * 10 * 0.866 = 20.78 N. Since F_gx (20.0 N) < f_s,max (20.78 N), the block remains at rest and static friction balances gravity exactly: f_s = 20.0 N.
4Two masses m1 = 3 kg and m2 = 2 kg are connected by a light inextensible cord passing over a frictionless, massless pulley in a standard Atwood machine. Taking g = 9.8 m/s^2, what is the tension in the cord during motion?
A.19.6 N
B.23.5 N
C.29.4 N
D.49.0 N
Explanation: The acceleration of the Atwood machine is a = (m1 - m2)g / (m1 + m2) = (3 - 2)(9.8) / (3 + 2) = 1.96 m/s^2. The cord tension is T = 2 * m1 * m2 * g / (m1 + m2) = 2 * 3 * 2 * 9.8 / 5 = 23.52 N, rounded to 23.5 N.
5A 1000 kg car negotiates a flat horizontal curve of radius R = 50 m. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and the dry road is mu_s = 0.8. Taking g = 10 m/s^2, what is the maximum speed the car can maintain without skidding?
A.15 m/s
B.20 m/s
C.25 m/s
D.40 m/s
Explanation: The centripetal force is supplied entirely by static friction: m * v^2 / R <= mu_s * m * g. Canceling mass m gives v_max = sqrt(mu_s * g * R) = sqrt(0.8 * 10 * 50) = sqrt(400) = 20 m/s.
6A force field given by F(x) = (3x^2 - 4x + 5) N acts on a particle moving along the x-axis from x = 1 m to x = 3 m. What is the total work done by this force on the particle?
A.16 J
B.20 J
C.26 J
D.32 J
Explanation: Work is the line integral of force: W = integral from 1 to 3 of (3x^2 - 4x + 5) dx = [x^3 - 2x^2 + 5x] from 1 to 3. Evaluating at 3 gives (27 - 18 + 15) = 24 J. Evaluating at 1 gives (1 - 2 + 5) = 4 J. Thus W = 24 - 4 = 20 J.
7A 0.5 kg block is released from rest at a height h = 2.0 m on a frictionless track that leads into a loop-the-loop of radius R = 0.5 m. Taking g = 10 m/s^2, what is the normal force exerted by the track on the block at the very top of the loop?
A.5 N
B.15 N
C.25 N
D.30 N
Explanation: At the top of the loop, the height is 2R = 1.0 m. By conservation of mechanical energy: m*g*h = m*g*(2R) + 0.5*m*v^2, so v^2 = 2g(h - 2R) = 2(10)(2.0 - 1.0) = 20 m^2/s^2. The radial equation of motion at the top is N + m*g = m*v^2 / R, so N = m(v^2/R - g) = 0.5 * (20 / 0.5 - 10) = 0.5 * (40 - 10) = 15 N.
8A 2.0 kg object has a potential energy function given by U(x) = 4x^3 - 12x (in Joules, with x in meters). What are the positions of stable and unstable equilibrium, respectively?
A.Stable at x = 1 m, unstable at x = -1 m
B.Stable at x = -1 m, unstable at x = 1 m
C.Stable at x = 0 m, unstable at x = sqrt(3) m
D.Both x = 1 m and x = -1 m are stable equilibria
Explanation: Equilibrium occurs where F = -dU/dx = 0. dU/dx = 12x^2 - 12 = 0 implies x = +1 m or x = -1 m. The second derivative is d^2U/dx^2 = 24x. At x = +1, d^2U/dx^2 = +24 > 0 (local minimum of potential energy, hence stable equilibrium). At x = -1, d^2U/dx^2 = -24 < 0 (local maximum of potential energy, hence unstable equilibrium).
9An electric motor delivers a constant power of 15 kW to hoist an elevator cab of mass 1200 kg. Taking g = 10 m/s^2 and neglecting all friction, what is the steady upward speed of the elevator?
A.0.80 m/s
B.1.25 m/s
C.1.50 m/s
D.2.00 m/s
Explanation: Power delivered at constant velocity is P = F * v = m * g * v. Solving for velocity yields v = P / (m * g) = 15,000 W / (1200 kg * 10 m/s^2) = 15,000 / 12,000 = 1.25 m/s.
10A 0.20 kg ball is thrown horizontally at 20 m/s against a solid vertical wall and rebounds horizontally at 15 m/s in the opposite direction. If the contact with the wall lasts for 0.05 s, what is the magnitude of the average force exerted by the wall on the ball?
A.20 N
B.70 N
C.140 N
D.350 N
Explanation: Taking the rebound direction as positive, delta_v = v_f - v_i = (+15) - (-20) = +35 m/s. The impulse is J = m * delta_v = 0.20 kg * 35 m/s = 7.0 N*s. The average force is F_avg = J / delta_t = 7.0 N*s / 0.05 s = 140 N.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the eligibility and other assessment requirements?

The 2026 guide requires the statutory Academy-entry conditions. Graduation from a MEB-approved higher-education program for the intended field is required by the Academy application date. Check the applicable MEB recruitment notice for accepted programs and other conditions; test participation does not confer an appointment right. All candidates must take the morning AGS session; subsequent Academy training is separate.

How is the real examination scored?

Raw score is correct answers minus one-quarter of wrong answers. Scores are standardized and combined under the guide’s field-specific rules; there is no universal pass mark or automatic appointment.
