Sample ÖABT Coğrafya Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the ÖABT Coğrafya exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 25+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1A map has scale 1:250,000. A straight segment measures 6 cm on it. What ground distance does the segment represent?
A.1.5 km
B.15 km
C.150 km
D.24 km
Explanation: One map centimeter represents 250,000 ground centimeters, or 2.5 km. Multiplying by six gives 15 km; this is a map distance calculation, not a road-route length.
2On a contour map with a constant contour interval, what does closer spacing of successive contours normally indicate?
A.A gentler slope
B.A lower elevation regardless of location
C.A steeper slope
D.A larger contour interval
Explanation: Closer contours represent the same vertical rise over a shorter horizontal distance. They therefore indicate a steeper gradient, although absolute elevation must be read from the contour values.
3Which plate interaction principally builds a continental collision mountain belt?
A.Divergence creating new oceanic crust
B.Transform motion without regional shortening
C.Hotspot volcanism within a stationary plate
D.Convergence causing crustal shortening and thickening
Explanation: Continental convergence compresses and thickens crust through folding, faulting, and related deformation. Divergent ridges and transform boundaries involve different dominant motions.
4Which process chiefly produces dissolution hollows in limestone karst terrain?
A.Chemical dissolution by water containing dissolved carbon dioxide
B.Wind depositing successive sand layers
C.Glacial plucking of valley-side rock
D.Thermal contraction of solidified lava
Explanation: Carbon dioxide dissolved in water supports carbonate dissolution along openings in limestone. Over time, this enlarges joints and depressions characteristic of karst.
5Why does descending unsaturated air commonly become warmer on a mountain's lee side?
A.Condensation absorbs all of its sensible heat
B.Compression raises its temperature as pressure increases
C.The Coriolis force directly supplies heat
D.Its temperature must stay constant while descending
Explanation: Descending air encounters higher pressure and warms through compression. This mechanism helps explain foehn conditions; the warming does not require direct heating by the ground throughout descent.
6Why does a saturated rising parcel generally cool more slowly than a comparable unsaturated rising parcel?
A.Condensation absorbs latent heat and increases the parcel's temperature
B.Saturated air descends within the parcel and warms by compression
C.Condensation releases latent heat that offsets some expansion cooling
D.Saturated ascent is isothermal because relative humidity remains near 100%
Explanation: As water vapor condenses, latent heat is released within the rising parcel. This offsets part of its expansion cooling; the saturated lapse rate varies with conditions rather than being one universal constant.
7Which observation distinguishes an endorheic drainage basin from one draining to the sea?
A.Its rivers have strongly seasonal discharge
B.Its streams converge on one main river
C.It contains an inland lake with a river outlet
D.Its surface drainage terminates internally rather than reaching the ocean
Explanation: Endorheic basins retain surface drainage internally, often in lakes or areas of evaporation and infiltration. Basin size and seasonal flow alone do not determine whether drainage is closed.
8A soil develops wide dry-season cracks and swells strongly when wetted because it contains abundant expanding clay. Which soil order best fits?
A.Vertisols
B.Histosols
C.Andisols
D.Spodosols
Explanation: Vertisols are characterized by expanding clays and strong shrink–swell behavior. Their properties cannot be inferred solely from a dark surface color or from the presence of volcanic rock nearby.
9Surface reflectance is 0.6 in near infrared and 0.2 in red. Using NDVI=(NIR−Red)/(NIR+Red), what is NDVI?
A.−0.5
B.0.5
C.0.4
D.2.0
Explanation: The numerator is 0.6−0.2=0.4 and the denominator is 0.8. Their ratio is 0.5; the normalized ratio is different from the unnormalized band difference.
10Two maps have identical printed dimensions. Map A has scale 1:25,000 and Map B 1:500,000. How do their represented ground areas compare?
A.A represents twenty times B's area
B.Both represent the same area
C.B represents four hundred times A's area
D.B represents twenty times A's area
Explanation: For equal printed dimensions, B covers twenty times the ground distance in each direction. Its ground area is therefore 20²=400 times A's, illustrating why linear and area scale factors differ.

About the ÖABT Coğrafya Exam

ÖABT Coğrafya is a separately named ÖSYM field-knowledge assessment used in the MEB Academy selection system. Its published scope includes physical, human, economic and regional geography.

Exam sponsor: ÖSYM / Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı (MEB). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

One written field test of 50 five-option MCQs in Turkish, lasting 70 minutes. No mandatory oral, practical, assignment or separate case-study submission occurs within this paper. The mandatory AGS session and subsequent Academy training and assessments are separate.

Time Limit

70 minutes

Passing Score

No universal pass mark. Standardized scores support selection; at least 1 net in AGS and the relevant ÖABT test is required for score calculation.

Exam / Certification Fees

TRY 800 for ÖABT (late application TRY 1,200), plus the mandatory AGS session at TRY 800 (late TRY 1,200).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the eligibility and other assessment requirements?

The 2026 guide requires the statutory Academy-entry conditions. Graduation from a MEB-approved higher-education program for the intended field is required by the Academy application date. Check the applicable MEB recruitment notice for accepted programs and other conditions; test participation does not confer an appointment right. All candidates must take the morning AGS session; subsequent Academy training is separate.

How is the real examination scored?

Raw score is correct answers minus one-quarter of wrong answers. Scores are standardized and combined under the guide’s field-specific rules; there is no universal pass mark or automatic appointment.
