Key Facts: Slovakia Maturita Geography Exam

The maturita in geography consists only of an oral internal examination (ústna forma internej časti, ÚFIČ MS).

Schools prepare at least 30 maturitné zadania from the national target requirements for geography (Cieľové požiadavky, ŠPÚ 2019).

Each assignment has three tasks graded 1–5 and weighted 1 : 2 : 3.

Decree No. 224/2022 Z. z. allows 20 minutes of preparation and 20 minutes of answering.

The subject examination commission consists of a chair and two examiners.

The geography target requirements have five areas, ending with the geography of the Slovak Republic.

Permitted aids include maps, the Geographic Atlas of the Slovak Republic, a geographic atlas and statistical data.

A final grade of 1–4 passes the subject; the examination is free for enrolled students.

The examination is held in the language in which the subject was taught, such as Slovak or Hungarian.

The Slovak maturita in geography is an oral school examination: the student draws one assignment of three tasks (weights 1 : 2 : 3), works with maps, atlases and statistics, gets 20 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to answer, and passes with a final grade of 1–4.

1What constitutes the primary object of study in geography as a complex scientific discipline?
A.The landscape sphere (krajinná sféra), combining natural components and human activity
B.Exclusively the mineral composition and tectonic movement of Earth's solid crust
C.Only the spatial distribution of animal and plant species across different climatic zones
D.Solely statistical demographic trends and urban population densities of sovereign states
Explanation: Modern geography studies the landscape sphere (krajinná sféra), which encompasses the holistic geosystem formed by the physical-geographical sphere (lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, biosphere) and the human-geographical or socio-economic sphere (population, settlements, and economy).
2Which definition accurately describes Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?
A.Handheld optical lenses used by surveyors to determine topographic elevations in field research
B.Computer-based software and hardware systems designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, and display spatial data
C.A static collection of printed multi-sheet cartographic wall maps and printed regional school atlases
D.A specialized global satellite network intended solely for military telecommunication and encrypted broadcasting
Explanation: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based tools that link spatial location coordinates with attribute data to facilitate advanced spatial modeling, querying, mapping, and decision-making.
3What is the primary operational principle of Remote Sensing (Diaľkový prieskum Zeme - DPZ)?
A.Extracting deep boreholes and sediment cores to sample bedrock layers directly
B.Conducting door-to-door demographic surveys and census interviews across municipal districts
C.Collecting data about Earth's surface from a distance with sensors on satellites or aircraft
D.Measuring underwater hydrostatic pressure via anchored deep-sea bathyscaphes
Explanation: Remote sensing (Diaľkový prieskum Zeme) gathers electromagnetic radiation data reflected or emitted from Earth's surface and atmosphere using airborne or spaceborne sensors without establishing physical contact with the surveyed features.
4When do spring tides (skočný príliv), with the greatest difference between high and low water, occur?
A.When the Moon is at first or last quarter, at right angles to the Sun
B.When Earth passes perihelion in early January, closest to the Sun
C.When melting snow in spring sharply raises the level of the oceans
D.When the Sun and Moon line up with Earth at new and full moon
Explanation: Tides are caused mainly by the Moon's gravity together with that of the Sun. At new and full moon the Sun, Moon, and Earth lie roughly in a line, so the two tidal effects reinforce each other and the tidal range is greatest (spring tides). At the first and last quarter the Sun and Moon act at right angles and the range is smallest (neap tides).
5Which cartographic visualization method displays statistical intensity across predefined administrative units using graduated color shading or hatching?
A.Choropleth map (kartogram)
B.Cartodiagram (kartodiagram)
C.Anamorphic map (kartografická anamorfoza)
D.Isarithmic map (izolíniová mapa)
Explanation: A choropleth map (kartogram) represents relative statistical values (such as population density per square kilometer or GDP per capita) within predefined territorial boundaries (e.g., okresy or kraje) using graduated color tints or hatch patterns.
6Why does the summer monsoon bring heavy rain to India?
A.Land heats faster than the sea, so low pressure over land draws moist ocean air inland
B.High pressure forms over the heated continent and pushes dry air out over the ocean
C.Cold winds descending from the Himalayas condense the moisture of the plains into rain
D.The ITCZ moves south of the equator in July and draws moist air in from Siberia
Explanation: In summer the Asian landmass heats up much more than the Indian Ocean, so a thermal low forms over the continent while pressure is higher over the sea. Moist air then flows from the ocean onto the land (the southwest summer monsoon), rises over the land and the mountains, and brings the rainy season. In winter the pattern reverses: high pressure over cold inner Asia sends dry winter-monsoon winds from land to sea.
7A climate diagram shows mean monthly temperatures between 25 and 28 °C all year and more than 150 mm of rain in every month. Which climate type does it represent?
A.Tropical savanna climate with a long dry season
B.Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters
C.Tropical monsoon climate with a dry winter season
D.Equatorial (humid tropical) climate
Explanation: Uniformly high temperatures with almost no annual variation and heavy rainfall in every month are the signature of the equatorial climate (for example the Amazon or Congo basins). Daily convection under the high midday Sun brings rain throughout the year, so the diagram shows no dry season.
8A district with 200,000 inhabitants recorded 2,400 live births and 2,800 deaths in one year. What was its rate of natural increase?
A.-4.0 ‰
B.-2.0 ‰
C.+2.0 ‰
D.+12.0 ‰
Explanation: Natural increase = births - deaths = 2,400 - 2,800 = -400 people. Related to 1,000 inhabitants: -400 / 200,000 × 1,000 = -2.0 ‰, which is a natural decrease (prirodzený úbytok).
9Which scientific term describes the true physical shape of planet Earth, defined by an equipotential surface of Earth's gravity field that coincides with mean sea level?
A.Geoid (geoid)
B.Perfect Euclidean sphere (guľa)
C.Prolate spheroid (pretiahnutý elipsoid)
D.Oblate rotational ellipsoid (rotačný elipsoid)
Explanation: The true physical shape of Earth is the geoid (geoid), an undulating equipotential surface of the terrestrial gravity field that closely matches global mean sea level if unaffected by winds, tides, and currents. For mathematical mapping calculations, reference rotational ellipsoids (elipsoidy) are used as approximations.
10What is the approximate duration of one sidereal day (hviezdny deň) corresponding to Earth's complete 360-degree rotation on its axis relative to distant stars?
A.24 hours 00 minutes 00 seconds
B.23 hours 56 minutes 04 seconds
C.24 hours 48 minutes 12 seconds
D.365 days 06 hours 09 minutes
Explanation: Earth completes one true 360° axial rotation relative to fixed stars in approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds (a sidereal day). The solar day (slnečný deň) lasts an average of 24 hours because Earth must rotate an additional ~1° to realign with the Sun as it advances along its orbital path.

4Connect physical and human geography, for example how relief and climate shape settlement, agriculture and transport in a region.
5Know Slovakia well: its relief units, rivers, climate, protected areas, population structure, regions and main economic sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of the Slovak maturita in geography?

Geography is taken only as an oral internal examination (ÚFIČ MS). The student draws one of at least 30 maturitné zadania prepared by the school from the national target requirements, prepares for 20 minutes and answers for 20 minutes before a subject commission made up of a chair and two examiners.

How is the geography maturita graded?

Each of the three tasks is graded 1 (výborný) to 5 (nedostatočný). Geography uses the weights 1 : 2 : 3, so the final grade is z = (z1 + 2·z2 + 3·z3) / 6, rounded under Decree No. 224/2022 Z. z. A final grade of 1–4 passes; a student who fails can take a retake (opravná skúška) in a later examination period, usually September or February.

What are the three tasks and which sources can be used?

Under the 2019 target requirements, task 1 is a broader knowledge question, task 2 is an application task in which the student demonstrates and defends a solution, and task 3 is a problem task requiring analysis, synthesis and evaluation of geographic data. The catalogue lists general and thematic maps, the Geographic Atlas of the Slovak Republic, a geographic atlas and statistical data as aids.

Is this practice bank an official maturita assignment set?

No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep: an English-language, four-option multiple-choice study adaptation of the five areas in the geography target requirements. It is not an official assignment set or translation and does not simulate the oral examination or its map-based tasks.
