Key Facts: Slovakia Maturita Physics Exam

The maturita in physics consists only of an oral internal examination (ústna forma internej časti, ÚFIČ MS).

Schools prepare at least 30 maturitné zadania from the national target requirements for physics (Cieľové požiadavky, ŠPÚ 2019).

Each assignment has three tasks graded 1–5 and weighted 3 : 4 : 3.

Decree No. 224/2022 Z. z. allows 20 minutes of preparation and 20 minutes of answering.

The subject examination commission consists of a chair and two examiners.

The physics target requirements have eight topic areas, from physical quantities and measurement to the basics of microworld physics.

Task 3 is the defence of the student's own experimental work using their laboratory notebook.

Permitted aids are tables and a scientific calculator without a graphing display.

A final grade of 1–4 passes the subject; the examination is free for enrolled students.

The Slovak maturita in physics is an oral school examination: the student draws one assignment of three tasks (weights 3 : 4 : 3, the third defending their own experiment), gets 20 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to answer, and passes with a final grade of 1–4.

1A car accelerates uniformly from rest along a straight horizontal road, reaching a speed of 20 m/s in a time interval of 8.0 s. What total distance does the car travel during this acceleration?
A.40 m
B.80 m
C.100 m
D.160 m
Explanation: For uniformly accelerated motion from rest (v_0 = 0 m/s), the acceleration is a = v / t = (20 m/s) / (8.0 s) = 2.5 m/s^2. The distance traveled is s = (1/2) * a * t^2 = 0.5 * 2.5 m/s^2 * (8.0 s)^2 = 80 m, or equivalently using average velocity s = (v / 2) * t = (10 m/s) * 8.0 s = 80 m.
2An object is thrown vertically upward from ground level with an initial speed of 30 m/s. Neglecting air resistance and taking g = 10 m/s^2, what is the maximum height reached by the object?
A.30 m
B.45 m
C.60 m
D.90 m
Explanation: At the highest point of vertical motion, the instantaneous velocity is zero. Using the kinematic relation v^2 = v_0^2 - 2*g*h gives 0 = 30^2 - 2 * 10 * h, which simplifies to 20 * h = 900, yielding h = 45 m.
3A cyclist moves around a circular track of radius r = 50 m at a constant speed of v = 10 m/s. What is the magnitude of the cyclist's centripetal acceleration?
A.0.20 m/s^2
B.0.50 m/s^2
C.2.0 m/s^2
D.5.0 m/s^2
Explanation: Centripetal acceleration for uniform circular motion is given by a_c = v^2 / r. Substituting the given values gives a_c = (10 m/s)^2 / (50 m) = 100 / 50 = 2.0 m/s^2.
4A flywheel rotates with an initial angular velocity of 40 rad/s and slows down uniformly to rest in 10 s under a constant angular deceleration. Through what total angle does the flywheel turn during this time?
A.50 rad
B.100 rad
C.200 rad
D.400 rad
Explanation: The angular deceleration magnitude is epsilon = omega_0 / t = (40 rad/s) / (10 s) = 4.0 rad/s^2. The angle turned during uniform deceleration to rest is theta = omega_0 * t - (1/2) * epsilon * t^2 = 40 * 10 - 0.5 * 4.0 * 100 = 400 - 200 = 200 rad.
5A projectile is launched horizontally from the edge of a cliff 80 m above a flat plain with an initial horizontal speed of 25 m/s. Neglecting air resistance and taking g = 10 m/s^2, what is the horizontal distance from the base of the cliff to the impact point?
A.75 m
B.100 m
C.125 m
D.200 m
Explanation: The time of flight depends solely on vertical free fall: h = (1/2) * g * t^2, so t = sqrt(2 * h / g) = sqrt(2 * 80 / 10) = sqrt(16) = 4.0 s. The horizontal distance traveled is x = v_x * t = (25 m/s) * (4.0 s) = 100 m.
6A constant horizontal net force of 60 N acts on a block of mass 12 kg resting on a frictionless horizontal floor. What is the acceleration of the block?
A.0.20 m/s^2
B.2.5 m/s^2
C.5.0 m/s^2
D.720 m/s^2
Explanation: According to Newton's second law of motion, F = m * a. Solving for acceleration yields a = F / m = (60 N) / (12 kg) = 5.0 m/s^2.
7A wooden crate of mass m = 20 kg rests on a rough horizontal surface with a coefficient of static friction f_s = 0.40. Taking g = 10 m/s^2, what minimum horizontal force is required to set the crate into motion?
A.8.0 N
B.50 N
C.80 N
D.200 N
Explanation: The normal force exerted by the horizontal floor is F_n = m * g = 20 kg * 10 m/s^2 = 200 N. The maximum static friction force is F_t = f_s * F_n = 0.40 * 200 N = 80 N. To initiate motion, an applied horizontal force exceeding 80 N is required.
8A bullet of mass 0.020 kg traveling horizontally at 400 m/s strikes and embeds itself into a stationary wooden block of mass 1.98 kg suspended on light cords. What is the common velocity of the block and bullet immediately after the collision?
A.0.40 m/s
B.2.0 m/s
C.4.0 m/s
D.8.0 m/s
Explanation: By conservation of linear momentum, p_initial = p_final: m_bullet * v_bullet = (m_bullet + M_block) * V. Substituting the numerical values gives (0.020 kg) * (400 m/s) = (0.020 kg + 1.98 kg) * V, so 8.0 kg*m/s = (2.0 kg) * V, resulting in V = 4.0 m/s.
9A force acting on a 0.50 kg tennis ball changes its velocity from -15 m/s to +25 m/s during an impact lasting 0.020 s. What is the magnitude of the average force exerted on the ball?
A.200 N
B.250 N
C.500 N
D.1000 N
Explanation: The change in momentum (impulse) is Delta p = m * Delta v = m * (v_final - v_initial) = 0.50 kg * (25 - (-15)) m/s = 0.50 * 40 = 20 N*s. The average force is F_avg = Delta p / Delta t = (20 N*s) / (0.020 s) = 1000 N.
10An elevator with passengers has a total mass of 800 kg. Taking g = 10 m/s^2, what is the tension in the supporting cable when the elevator ascends with an upward acceleration of 2.5 m/s^2?
A.2000 N
B.6000 N
C.8000 N
D.10000 N
Explanation: Applying Newton's second law along the vertical axis gives T - m*g = m*a, hence T = m * (g + a). Substituting numerical values yields T = 800 kg * (10 + 2.5) m/s^2 = 800 * 12.5 = 10000 N.

Slovakia Maturita Physics: Suggested Study Strategy

1Keep your laboratory notebook complete and rehearse explaining the aim, method, measurements, uncertainties and conclusions of each experiment for task 3.
2Practise solving problems with the physical tables and a non-graphing calculator, always checking units and orders of magnitude.
3For task 1, prepare short explanations of key laws (Newton's laws, conservation laws, the gas laws, Ohm's and Faraday's laws) with one simple worked example each.
4Draw force diagrams, circuit diagrams and ray diagrams before calculating; the commission often asks you to justify each step.
5Revise all eight topic areas, because no maturita assignment may be built from a single area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of the Slovak maturita in physics?

Physics is taken only as an oral internal examination (ÚFIČ MS). The student draws one of at least 30 maturitné zadania prepared by the school from the national target requirements, prepares for 20 minutes and answers for 20 minutes before a subject commission made up of a chair and two examiners.

How is the physics maturita graded?

Each of the three tasks is graded 1 (výborný) to 5 (nedostatočný). Unlike several other subjects, physics uses the weights 3 : 4 : 3, so the final grade is z = (3·z1 + 4·z2 + 3·z3) / 10, rounded under Decree No. 224/2022 Z. z. A final grade of 1–4 passes; a student who fails can take a retake (opravná skúška) in a later examination period, usually September or February.

What happens in the experimental task and which aids are allowed?

In task 3 the student defends their own experimental work related to the assignment, using their laboratory notebook (zošit laboratórnych cvičení). The catalogue permits mathematical, physical and chemical tables and a calculator with at least a ten-digit display, powers, roots, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions, but no graphing display.

Is this practice bank an official maturita assignment set?

No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep: an English-language, four-option multiple-choice study adaptation of the eight topic areas in the physics target requirements. It is not an official assignment set or translation and does not simulate the oral examination or the experimental defence.
