1A car moves along a straight road with a constant acceleration of 2.5 m/s². If the car starts from rest, what is its velocity after 6.0 s?
A.7.5 m/s
B.30 m/s
C.45 m/s
D.15 m/s
Explanation: For uniformly accelerated motion from rest, v = v0 + a t = 0 + 2.5 × 6.0 = 15 m/s.
2A stone is dropped from rest from the top of a vertical cliff and strikes the ground 4.0 s later. Neglecting air resistance and taking g = 9.8 m/s², what is the height of the cliff?
A.39.2 m
B.156.8 m
C.19.6 m
D.78.4 m
Explanation: In free fall from rest (v0 = 0), vertical displacement is given by y = (1/2) * g * t². Substituting the parameters gives y = 0.5 * 9.8 m/s² * (4.0 s)² = 4.9 * 16 = 78.4 m. The displacement is proportional to the square of the elapsed time under constant gravitational acceleration.
3A block of mass 5.0 kg rests on a horizontal surface. A horizontal pulling force of 20 N is applied to the right while a constant kinetic friction force of 5.0 N opposes the motion. What is the magnitude of the block's acceleration?
A.1.0 m/s²
B.4.0 m/s²
C.5.0 m/s²
D.3.0 m/s²
Explanation: According to Newton's second law, the net horizontal force determines acceleration: F_net = F_pull - F_friction = 20 N - 5.0 N = 15 N. Then a = F_net / m = 15 N / 5.0 kg = 3.0 m/s². The frictional force reduces the effective accelerating force acting on the mass.
4A 2.0 kg block slides down a plane inclined at 30° to the horizontal. A friction force of 3.4 N acts on it. What is the magnitude of its acceleration? (g = 9.8 m s⁻², sin 30° = 0.50)
A.3.2 m/s²
B.4.9 m/s²
C.6.6 m/s²
D.1.7 m/s²
Explanation: The component of the weight along the plane is m g sin 30° = 2.0 × 9.8 × 0.50 = 9.8 N. The resultant force along the plane is 9.8 − 3.4 = 6.4 N, so a = 6.4 / 2.0 = 3.2 m/s².
5According to Newton's third law of motion, which statement correctly describes an action-reaction pair of forces?
A.The forces act on two different bodies and have equal magnitude but opposite directions.
B.The forces act on the same body and cancel each other out to produce equilibrium.
C.The action force occurs before the reaction force with a slight time delay.
D.The action force is always greater in magnitude than the reaction force during acceleration.
Explanation: Newton's third law states that whenever body A exerts a force on body B, body B simultaneously exerts a force on body A of equal magnitude and opposite direction. Because the two forces act on different bodies, they never cancel each other out in the equation of motion of a single object.
6A ball is launched vertically upward with an initial speed of 19.6 m/s from ground level. Taking g = 9.8 m/s² and neglecting air resistance, what is the maximum height reached by the ball?
A.19.6 m
B.9.8 m
C.2.0 m
D.39.2 m
Explanation: At the highest point the velocity is zero. By conservation of mechanical energy (or v² = v0² − 2 g h): h = v0² / (2 g) = 19.6² / (2 × 9.8) = 19.6 m. Equivalently, the ball takes t = v0 / g = 2.0 s to reach the top, and h = v0 t − ½ g t² = 39.2 − 19.6 = 19.6 m.
7A car goes round a roundabout of radius 20 m at a constant speed of 10 m/s. What is the magnitude of its acceleration?
A.0 m/s²
B.0.50 m/s²
C.2.0 m/s²
D.5.0 m/s²
Explanation: In uniform circular motion the speed is constant but the direction of the velocity changes, so there is a centripetal acceleration: a = v² / r = 10² / 20 = 5.0 m/s², directed towards the centre.
8The 1D position of a particle moving along the x-axis is given by x(t) = 4.0 + 3.0t - 2.0t² (in SI units). What is the acceleration of the particle at t = 2.0 s?
A.-4.0 m/s²
B.-2.0 m/s²
C.3.0 m/s²
D.-5.0 m/s²
Explanation: Comparing x(t) = 4.0 + 3.0 t − 2.0 t² with x = x0 + v0 t + ½ a t² gives x0 = 4.0 m, v0 = 3.0 m/s and ½ a = −2.0 m/s², so a = −4.0 m/s². The acceleration is constant, so it has this value at t = 2.0 s.
9An elevator cab of mass 800 kg accelerates upward at a constant rate of 1.5 m/s². Taking g = 9.8 m/s², what is the tension in the supporting cable?
A.6640 N
B.7840 N
C.9040 N
D.1200 N
Explanation: Applying Newton's second law in the upward direction: T - m*g = m*a. Rearranging gives T = m*(g + a) = (800 kg)(9.8 m/s² + 1.5 m/s²) = 800 * 11.3 = 9040 N. When accelerating upward, tension must exceed the cab's weight to provide the upward net force.
10A geostationary satellite completes one orbit in about 24 h. What is the magnitude of its angular speed?
A.2.6 × 10⁻¹ rad/s
B.4.4 × 10⁻³ rad/s
C.1.2 × 10⁻⁵ rad/s
D.7.3 × 10⁻⁵ rad/s
Explanation: ω = 2π / T, with T in seconds: T = 24 × 3600 = 86 400 s, so ω = 2π / 86 400 ≈ 7.3 × 10⁻⁵ rad/s. This equals the angular speed of the Earth's rotation, which is why the satellite stays above the same point.
