NICET recertification policy
NICET ITFAS Level II is for fire alarm technicians who inspect and test complex, interfaced systems rather than designing or installing them. The exam (updated October 7, 2024) has 80 questions in 110 minutes, taken at a Pearson VUE test center with NICET's allowed references - principally NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 92 (2021). Content weights are Plan and Coordinate Work 15-25%, Inspect Interfaces and Specialty Equipment 20-30%, and Test Functionality of Specialized and Interfaced Equipment 50-60%, making hands-on test procedures the bulk of the exam: elevator Phase I recall and shunt trip, smoke control and FSCS operation, pre-action/double interlock and clean agent releasing sequences, emergency communications (ERCES, firefighter phones, mass notification), specialized detection (aspirating, beam, flame), networked control units, and detector sensitivity measurement. Certification also requires passing Level I, 18 months of experience, and supervisor-verified performance measures; the fee is $315. Scoring is pass/fail against an unpublished cut score with an unofficial result at the test center.

1A technician is planning the periodic inspection and testing of an existing fire alarm system. Which chapter of NFPA 72 (2022) contains the required test methods, frequencies, and inspection requirements that govern this work?
2Before activating any initiating devices during a scheduled test of a fire alarm system that transmits signals off premises, the technician's FIRST notification call should be to the:
3Under NFPA 72 (2022) Chapter 7, completed inspection and testing records for a fire alarm system must be retained on the premises:
4During testing of a high-rise fire alarm system, a networked control unit fails and the required system will remain out of service for approximately 8 hours while parts are obtained. In accordance with the fire code and NFPA 72 impairment provisions, what must occur?
5When surveying a complex fire alarm system before an inspection, which existing document is MOST useful for identifying all interfaced systems and the expected response of each output when a given device activates?
6A technician is scheduling the annual test of elevator Phase I recall initiated by the fire alarm system. With whom must this testing be coordinated so the cars can be safely operated, observed, and restored?
7While testing fire alarm interfaces with an automatic sprinkler system, the inspector's test connection must be opened to flow water. Which standard governs the inspection, testing, and maintenance of the water-based system components involved?
8Which standard contains the periodic operational testing requirements for a building's dedicated smoke control system that the fire alarm technician must reference when planning interface tests?
9All of the following parties should normally be notified before beginning a functional test of an occupied building's fire alarm system EXCEPT the:
10During a pre-inspection survey of a high-rise, the technician discovers a bi-directional amplifier (BDA) with a dedicated annunciator panel for the emergency responder communications enhancement system (ERCES). How should this affect the Level II inspection scope?
About the NICET ITFAS Level II Exam
The NICET Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) Level II exam certifies technicians who plan, perform, and coordinate periodic inspections and tests of complex fire alarm systems, including suppression releasing interfaces, smoke control interfaces, networked control units, air sampling detection, multi-zone voice evacuation, high-rise applications, and ERCES interfaces. Updated October 7, 2024, the computer-based exam has 80 questions in 110 minutes at Pearson VUE test centers and references NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 92 (2021). Level II carries the Associate Engineering Technician designation and requires passing the Level I and II exams plus 18 months of verified inspection and testing experience. The application fee is $315.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the NICET ITFAS Level II exam?
The ITFAS Level II exam has 80 questions to be completed in 110 minutes, per the NICET candidate handbook updated October 2024. It is computer-based and administered at Pearson VUE test centers; unlike Level I, it is not offered via online proctoring.
Is the ITFAS Level II exam open book?
Candidates may use the references NICET lists for the exam, principally NFPA 72 (2022 edition) and NFPA 92 (2021 edition) following the October 7, 2024 exam update. A basic and a scientific calculator are built into the exam software; personal calculators are not allowed.
What experience is required for ITFAS Level II certification?
Certification requires a minimum of 18 months of inspection and testing experience: the 6 months required for Level I plus 12 additional months, of which at least 6 months must involve periodic inspection and testing of complex fire alarm systems. Supervisor-verified performance measures and passing both the Level I and Level II exams are also required.
What counts as a 'complex' fire alarm system at Level II?
NICET defines complex systems as including suppression systems, networked control units, smoke control interfaces, air sampling (aspirating) systems, multi-zone voice evacuation systems, high-rise applications, and Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement System (ERCES) interfaces such as DAS and BDA equipment.
What are the ITFAS Level II content domain weights?
Plan and Coordinate Work is 15-25% of the exam, Inspect Interfaces and Specialty Equipment is 20-30%, and Test Functionality of Specialized and Interfaced Equipment is 50-60%, so more than half the exam covers hands-on test procedures for elevator recall, smoke control, suppression releasing, emergency communications, specialized detection, and networked equipment.
Can FAS certification give credit toward ITFAS Level II?
Yes. Candidates who met the exam requirements for Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) Level III or IV are eligible to apply for exam credit toward ITFAS Levels I and II (and are then not eligible to sit those ITFAS exams). FAS Level II credit applies to ITFAS Level I only. The application review fee is $160.
How long is ITFAS Level II certification valid?
NICET certification is valid for three years. Recertification requires 90 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points per certification over the three-year cycle, drawn from at least two CPD categories such as active practice, additional education, and certification activity.
