1What is the main purpose of a texto expositivo-explicativo, such as an encyclopedia entry on how cyclones form?
A.To tell a fictional story with characters and a plot
B.To present and explain information about a subject in an objective way
C.To persuade the reader to adopt the author's opinion
D.To express the author's feelings through images and rhythm
Explanation: Expository-explanatory texts transmit knowledge: they present a subject and explain causes, processes or relationships using objective, clear language, often in the third person and the present tense.
2In an expository text, the sentence 'A malária é uma doença infecciosa causada por parasitas do género Plasmodium' uses which process of exposition?
A.Exemplificação (giving examples)
B.Comparação (comparison)
C.Definição (definition)
D.Enumeração (listing)
Explanation: The sentence says what malaria is by placing it in a general class ('doença infecciosa') and adding its specific feature ('causada por parasitas do género Plasmodium'). This is a definition.
3In 'Choveu tanto em Dezembro que o rio Búzi transbordou', how is the clause 'que o rio Búzi transbordou' classified?
A.Oração subordinada adverbial causal
B.Oração subordinada adverbial final
C.Oração subordinada adverbial concessiva
D.Oração subordinada adverbial consecutiva
Explanation: The structure 'tanto… que' introduces the consequence of what is said in the main clause: the river overflowed as a result of so much rain. This is a consecutive clause.
4Which sentence contains an oração subordinada adverbial consecutiva?
A.Estudou porque tinha exame na segunda-feira.
B.Estudou para passar no exame nacional.
C.Estudou de tal modo que ficou exausto.
D.Embora estudasse muito, teve dificuldades em Matemática.
Explanation: 'De tal modo que' introduces the result of the action of studying: he became exhausted as a consequence. Consecutive clauses are often introduced by 'tão… que', 'tanto… que', 'de tal modo que' or 'de maneira que'.
5The verb 'entristecer' is formed from the adjective 'triste' by adding a prefix and a suffix at the same time (en- + trist- + -ecer). What is this process of word formation called?
A.Parassíntese (derivação parassintética)
B.Composição por justaposição
C.Derivação regressiva
D.Conversão (derivação imprópria)
Explanation: In parasynthesis the prefix and suffix are added simultaneously; neither '*entriste' nor '*tristecer' exists on its own. Other examples: 'amanhecer', 'entardecer', 'enriquecer'.
6The noun 'a luta' comes from the verb 'lutar' by removing the verbal ending, without adding any affix. How is this word formed?
A.Derivação por prefixação
B.Derivação por sufixação
C.Derivação regressiva
D.Composição por justaposição
Explanation: Regressive derivation forms a noun (usually an action noun) by shortening a verb: 'lutar' → 'luta', 'combater' → 'combate', 'chorar' → 'choro'.
7In 'O jantar foi servido às vinte horas', the infinitive 'jantar' works as a noun. Which process of word formation does this illustrate?
A.Parassíntese (derivação parassintética)
B.Conversão (derivação imprópria)
C.Derivação por prefixação
D.Composição por aglutinação
Explanation: Conversion (derivação imprópria) changes the grammatical class of a word without changing its form. Here the verb 'jantar', preceded by the article 'o', becomes a noun.
8A Mozambican speaker says 'Apanhei o machimbombo para a cidade', while a Brazilian speaker would say 'Peguei o ônibus para a cidade'. What does this difference illustrate?
A.A spelling error made by the Mozambican speaker
B.Variation of Portuguese in space (variação geográfica)
C.A difference between spoken and written language only
D.The use of slang by young people
Explanation: Portuguese varies from country to country. 'Machimbombo' (bus) is typical of Mozambican Portuguese, while Brazil uses 'ônibus' and Portugal 'autocarro'. Each variant has its own vocabulary and is correct in its community.
9Complete with the correct regência of a verb of separation: 'A menina afastou-se ___ grupo para atender o telefone.'
A.do
B.ao
C.no
D.pelo
Explanation: Verbs expressing separation or distance, such as 'afastar-se', 'separar-se', 'desligar-se' and 'divorciar-se', take a complement introduced by 'de': 'afastou-se do (de + o) grupo'.
10Which sentence uses the verb 'assistir', in the sense of 'to watch', with its normative regência?
A.Os alunos assistiram o debate sobre a paz.
B.Os alunos assistiram no debate sobre a paz.
C.Os alunos assistiram ao debate sobre a paz.
D.Os alunos assistiram pelo debate sobre a paz.
Explanation: Meaning 'to watch' or 'to be present at', 'assistir' requires the preposition 'a': 'assistir ao debate'. Without the preposition ('assistir o doente') it means 'to help' or 'to give care to'.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of the 12ª classe exams?

INECE sets a separate paper for each subject, written in Portuguese. Recent papers usually have 40 multiple-choice questions with four options, marked on an answer sheet. In the 2026 external timetable, Português lasts 120 minutes and História, Geografia and Filosofia 90 minutes.

How do I pass a 12ª classe subject?

Marks use the 0–20 scale. Under Diploma Ministerial n.º 7/2019, internal pupils need a final subject mark of at least 10 with an exam mark of at least 9. External candidates need at least 10 in each subject examined.

Can I sit the exams as an external candidate?

Yes. External candidates must be 17 or older, have completed the 10ª classe and meet one of the edital's conditions, such as having attended the 11ª classe or having passed at least one 12ª classe subject in an earlier year. They pre-register on externo.inece.co.mz and then register at an exam-centre school (8 September to 2 October 2026), paying 250 MT plus 200 MT per subject. The 2026 external exams run from 14 to 18 December 2026.

Is this an official translation of the exam?

No. This is an independent English-language multiple-choice study adaptation by OpenExamPrep. It is not an official INECE translation or a simulation of the papers, and Portuguese-language items are explained in English, so practise with past Portuguese papers as well.

Which topics does this bank cover?

It follows INECE's 2026 matrices for Português, História, Geografia and Filosofia, with 20 questions per subject. The equal split is our own study allocation, not an official weighting.
