1According to Section 1.1.1 of the Montana CDL Manual, when must an applicant take the air brakes knowledge test?
A.Only when driving a tractor-trailer combination
B.Only when the vehicle's GVWR is over 26,000 pounds
C.When the vehicle has air brakes, even air over hydraulic
D.Only when the vehicle hauls placarded hazardous materials
Explanation: Section 1.1.1 lists the air brakes test as one you must take if your vehicle has air brakes, including air over hydraulic brakes. Trucks, buses, and combinations of any class can need it.
2An applicant skips the air brake knowledge test. What does the resulting L restriction prohibit?
A.Driving a CMV with any air brakes, even air over hydraulic
B.Driving a CMV with full air brakes, but not air over hydraulic
C.Driving any CMV that has a manual transmission
D.Driving any CMV across the state line out of Montana
Explanation: Section 1 says that if an applicant does not take or fails the air brake component of the knowledge test, or takes the skills test in a vehicle without air brakes, the CLP or CDL is restricted from operating a CMV equipped with any type of air brakes. For this restriction, air brakes include any system operating fully or partially on the air brake principle.
3A Montana applicant passes the written air brake test, then takes the skills test in a medium-duty truck with air-over-hydraulic brakes. Which restriction will the CDL show?
A.L, barring any vehicle with air brakes of any kind
B.E, barring vehicles with a manual transmission
C.O, barring tractor-trailer combinations
D.Z, barring vehicles with full air brakes
Explanation: Section 1 says that if an applicant performs the skills test in a vehicle equipped with air over hydraulic brakes, the CDL is restricted from operating a CMV with any braking system operating fully on the air brake principle. That is the Z restriction.
4Under the federal rule that applies to Montana's CDL knowledge tests, what score is needed to pass the air brake test?
A.70 percent
B.80 percent
C.75 percent
D.90 percent
Explanation: 49 CFR 383.135 says an applicant must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions on each knowledge test. An applicant who fails the air brake portion and is still issued a CLP or CDL gets an air brake restriction.
5Montana's CDL Manual defines the air brake (L) restriction. What must a driver pass to show they are qualified for airbrake-equipped vehicles?
A.The written air brake test only
B.A road test in any vehicle with air brakes
C.The written, pre-trip, basic skills, and road tests
D.A brake adjustment class taught by a certified mechanic
Explanation: The Montana-specific definitions in the CDL Manual say the L restriction prohibits operating airbrake-equipped vehicles unless the driver has passed the required examinations (written, pre-trip, basic skills, and road tests) to show they are qualified to operate an airbrake-equipped vehicle.
6Besides Section 5, which manual section does Section 5 say to study if you will pull a trailer with air brakes?
A.Section 6, Combination Vehicles
B.Section 4, Transporting Passengers
C.Section 8, Tank Vehicles
D.Section 10, School Buses
Explanation: Section 5 says that if you want to drive a truck or bus with air brakes, or pull a trailer with air brakes, you need to read Section 5. If you want to pull a trailer with air brakes, you also need to read Section 6, Combination Vehicles.
7Section 5 describes an air brake setup as three braking systems in one. Which list names them?
A.Primary, secondary, and trailer
B.Front, rear, and trailer
C.Hydraulic, air, and engine
D.Service, parking, and emergency
Explanation: Section 5 says air brakes are really three different braking systems: the service brake, which you apply with the brake pedal in normal driving; the parking brake, applied with the parking brake control; and the emergency brake system, which uses parts of the service and parking systems to stop the vehicle in a brake system failure.
8What does the emergency brake system in an air brake vehicle use to stop the vehicle when the brake system fails?
A.A separate hydraulic circuit with its own pedal
B.Parts of the service and parking brake systems
C.The engine retarder alone
D.A cable-operated drum on the driveshaft
Explanation: Section 5 says the emergency brake system uses parts of the service and parking brake systems to stop the vehicle in a brake system failure. Section 5.1.14 adds that spring brakes are usually used to meet the emergency and parking brake requirements.
9What does the air compressor do?
A.Controls when air is released from the brakes
B.Turns the s-cam to apply the brakes
C.Pumps air into the air storage tanks
D.Removes water and oil from the tanks
Explanation: Section 5.1.1 says the air compressor pumps air into the air storage tanks (reservoirs). It is connected to the engine through gears or a v-belt, may be air cooled or cooled by the engine cooling system, and may have its own oil supply or use engine oil.
10If the air compressor has its own oil supply, what does Section 5.1.1 say to do?
A.Check its oil level before driving
B.Drain its oil at the end of each day
C.Replace its oil every time you fuel
D.Nothing, because it is sealed for life
Explanation: Section 5.1.1 says the compressor may have its own oil supply or be lubricated by engine oil. If the compressor has its own oil supply, check the oil level before driving.

About the MT CDL Air Brakes Exam

The Montana CDL Air Brakes Knowledge Test is required for anyone who will drive a commercial motor vehicle with air brakes, including air over hydraulic brakes. Montana MVD gives it at driver license exam stations, and it is based on Section 5 of the Montana CDL Manual. Skipping or failing it leads to the L restriction, and taking the skills test in an air-over-hydraulic vehicle leads to the Z restriction. Independent practice by OpenExamPrep covers system parts and pressures, spring brakes and parking controls, ABS, dual air systems, the Step 5 and Step 7 inspection checks, brake lag, brake fade, and downgrade braking. These four-option questions are an independent study aid, not a copy or simulation of the official MVD test, and they do not replace the skills test.

MT CDL Air Brakes: Suggested Study Strategy

1Memorize the pressure figures in the June 2026 Montana manual: cut-in about 100 psi, cut-out about 125 psi, safety valve 150 psi, low air warning before 55 psi, and spring brakes at 20 to 45 psi.
2Know the leakage limits: released, under 2 psi a minute (single) or 3 (combination); applied, no more than 3 psi (single) or 4 (combination).
3Practice the Step 7 sequence: governor cut-out and cut-in, leakage rates, low air warning, spring brake pop-out, build-up rate, parking brake, and service brake.
4Learn when the L and Z restrictions apply, since they depend on the knowledge test and on the skills-test vehicle.
5Remember brake lag: one half second or more, about 32 feet at 55 mph, for a total stopping distance over 450 feet.
6Never press the brake pedal while the spring brakes are on, and don't set the parking brakes when the brakes are very hot or very wet in freezing weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has to take the Montana CDL air brakes test?

Section 1.1.1 of the Montana CDL Manual says you must take the air brakes test if your vehicle has air brakes, including air over hydraulic brakes. If you skip or fail it, your CLP or CDL carries the L restriction, which bars any CMV with air brakes.

What is the difference between the L and Z restrictions?

L bars driving any CMV with air brakes and applies when you skip or fail the air brake knowledge test or take the skills test in a vehicle without air brakes. Z bars only vehicles with full air brakes and applies when you take the skills test in a vehicle with air-over-hydraulic brakes.

What are the governor cut-in and cut-out pressures?

Section 5.1.2 says the governor stops the compressor at the cut-out level, around 125 psi, and lets it start pumping again at the cut-in level, around 100 psi. Check the manufacturer's specifications during the Step 7 check.

When must the low air pressure warning come on?

Section 5.1.11 of the Montana CDL Manual says the warning must come on before tank pressure falls below 55 psi, or one half the governor cut-out pressure on older vehicles. On large buses it commonly signals at 80-85 psi.

At what pressure do the spring brakes come on?

Section 5.1.14 says tractor and straight truck spring brakes come fully on when air pressure drops to 20 to 45 psi, typically 20 to 30 psi. Don't wait for that; stop safely as soon as the low air warning comes on.

What are the maximum air leakage rates?

Section 5.3.3 says that with the engine off and the parking brake released, the loss should be less than 2 psi in one minute for a single vehicle and less than 3 psi for a combination. With the foot brake fully applied for one minute, a loss of more than 3 psi (single) or 4 psi (combination) is too much.

How should I brake on a long downgrade?

Section 5.4.6 says to get into the proper low gear first, because the brakes only supplement engine braking. Apply the brakes just hard enough to feel a definite slowdown, release them at about 5 mph below your safe speed (an application of about 3 seconds), and repeat when you are back at the safe speed.

Are these practice questions the official Montana test?

No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep built from the Montana CDL Manual. The four-option questions are a study aid, not a copy or simulation of the official MVD test, and they do not replace the skills tests.
