About the LCA English and Communication Exam
Leaving Certificate Applied English and Communication is a mandatory final-examination course in Ireland’s two-year LCA programme. The Revised 2021 NCCA module descriptor develops reading, writing, listening and oral communication for adult and working life. Students complete four sequential modules: personal and social communication (identity, relationships and journeys through prose texts); communication and the digital world (digital identity, safety, cyberbullying awareness and digital citizenship); communication in media (media forms, advertising and film studies); and express yourself (song, poetry, drama and reflection). Assessment by the State Examinations Commission awards credits for Key Assignments, an oral examination and a two-hour written paper that includes an audio-visual section. LCA itself is awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction based on total credits out of 200.
